Message from CEO

Dear colleagues,

In a new hospital, you always have “firsts”. So last month, we had our first major setback: mould was discovered in an unused patient room, and coincidentally, we had two patients with fungus found in their BAL after bronchoscopy. It always seemed very improbable that the two were connected, but to be very sure, we took strict precautionary measures such as transferring patients to another tower and deep cleaning the ward. Though these measures caught the eye of the media, the important thing is that we did the right thing and made sure quality was not compromised. We also evaluated and learnt useful lessons in terms of crisis management, infection control and how to work with the Department of Health. I want to thank all concerned for their professionalism in handling the incident and ensuring patient safety.

I am also glad to say that we are progressing on our three main challenges: improve our care processes, increase our patient volume and provide excellent service. Let me this month expand a little on our patient volume. We are currently seeing an increase in patient volume in all areas. I think we are all feeling this effect, and are grateful for it. When I meet doctors and nurses in the wards, they all say they notice the uptick. For example, in July, we expect to almost double the number of inpatient admissions we had in June. Also in outpatient SOCs, lab and radiology we are seeing a healthy increase of patient numbers. We will also be opening new services, such as our radiotherapy. The team has managed to get the licence very recently – well done! Also, we will be seeing the opening of our obstetrics services later this year. So these are all welcome developments.

Having said that, we cannot rest assured that patients now know where to find us. As I said earlier, we need to hone our skills, further improve our care, and fulfil our market promise of a new way of providing care for Hong Kong patients. This will require a further increase in patient volume, and therefore a deliberate and concerted effort from all of us to bring the message out and the numbers in. Like all things at GHK, we must do this as a team. I would like to encourage you all to make GHK known to your personal networks, share with friends what services we have, share GHK Facebook feeds, and actively solicit feedback on your friends’ perception of GHK. This way, we can use all that feedback and experience to make GHK a better place and the best hospital in Hong Kong. It can be done!

Thanks all for all your efforts and dedication!

Dirk Schraven
Chief Executive Officer

A new way to communicate with doctors

As more and more doctors are joining GHK in various capacities, it’s imperative for us to communicate with our doctors in a timely and effective manner.

You will be pleased to learn that the new Doctor’s Portal under Doctor’s Corner on GHK website will soon be launched. A dedicated platform to provide doctors with the latest of the hospital’s news, policies, services, pricing and billing schemes, discounts and promotions, upcoming CME meetings, the portal will be accessible by all doctors accredited to GHK. Doctors can also give us feedback through the portal such that their questions can be addressed efficiently. Login details are being sent to our doctors individually.

All departments are welcome to make the best use of this portal and liaise with Medical Affairs Department on any news, services and schemes that they may like to communicate or promote to our doctors.

Radiotherapy services soon be available at GHK
Our Radiotherapy and Oncology Centre will soft open on 1 August 2017. Located on the B/F, the Centre will deliver a range of radiotherapy services including volumetric modulated arc therapy, intensity modulated radiotherapy, stereotactic radiotherapy, image-guided radiation therapy, 3D conformal radiotherapy and electron therapy.  With the team’s professional care coupled with state-of-the-art equipment including a TRUEBEAM Linear Accelerator and a CT Simulator, GHK is poised to provide patients with excellent end-to-end service every step of their treatment journeys.

Bidding farewell to Deputy CEO with gratefulness

Colleagues from various departments and our partners gathered and staged a mini-event to say goodbye to Mr Lee Cheow Seng, our former Deputy CEO, as he finished his secondment at GHK. The gathering was not only an occasion to bid farewell, but also a moment for staff to express their gratitude for his great leadership during the past year.

On behalf of GHK, our CEO Mr Dirk Schraven recounted some of the valuable knowledge and insights we had learned from Mr Lee and paid tribute to the many milestones that Mr Lee had led GHK to achieve.

As a token of staff’s gratefulness for his unfailing support to us, a number of surprise gifts which included a video clip highlighting all the fond memories, a photo album, a miniature figure and a tailor-made cake were prepared for Mr Lee.

From everyone at GHK, we send our thankfulness and warmest wishes to Mr Lee.

Giving the gift of life at GHK

Giving blood is one of the easiest way to save lives. Riding on the World Blood Donor Day, GHK collaborated with the Hong Kong Red Cross and turned the Seminar Room into a blood donation centre on 29 June 2017. We were pleased to see that around 75 colleagues participated in the donation drive. We look forward to your support for similar community initiatives in future.
