Dear colleagues,
Following our welcoming of the first GHK baby in February, March was another joyous month for GHK as we celebrated our first anniversary with a staff tea party, a doctors’ lunch, and finally our grand opening on the day of GHK’s first birthday with around 110 external guests. The Chief Executive’s endorsement of GHK’s efforts in offering fee transparency is a real encouragement to us, and I hope that all of you are proud of being part of this mission of bringing transformation to Hong Kong’s private healthcare.
Our first anniversary also marks the beginning of another stage of GHK’s development as we see the progressive execution of some of the initiatives related to medical student teaching, research programmes with HKU, ACHS accreditation etc. At the end of last month, bed-side teaching for year 5 and 6 medical students started. The programme is starting off with emergency medicine and orthopaedics, and we will gradually extend it to other specialties as our case load increases. Further, the Clinical Research Ethics Committee has been established to oversee clinical research, with two studies already been submitted. Preparation for ACHS accreditation is progressing. To ensure that we are all ready for the gap analysis scheduled for 20 – 24 August, we have started the self-assessment exercises and small group discussions with different criterion champions.
As the patient volume continues to grow, we feel the need to increase our manpower in some areas to deal with the additional patient demand. We are actively attracting more healthcare assistants and service assistants in some areas, as well as additional staff for some supporting departments. We are also actively trying to resolve manpower shortage in certain areas due to some staff turnover lately. I ask all colleagues to chip in and help the departments where we can, to bridge the manpower needs.
Finally, we have our annual dinner coming up on 19 April! I hope many of you will be able to join the dinner and look forward to catching up with all of you!
Dirk Schraven

21 March 2018 was a momentous day for everyone at GHK! It marked the beginning of our full-swing operation as well as our first birthday!
It was our great honour to have The Honourable Mrs Carrie Lam, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, grace the special occasion as Guest of Honour. The event welcomed around 110 guests, including business, industry and community stakeholders from Hong Kong and different parts of the world, who joined us to celebrate this important milestone.
At the ceremony, Mrs Carrie Lam extended her strong support to GHK’s mission of offering fee transparency and medical packages, which address patients’ concerns in using private healthcare services. Mrs Lam also believed that with world-class additions such as GHK, Hong Kong’s dual-track healthcare system will become stronger, more efficient and better equipped to respond to the varying needs of Hong Kong people.
Mrs Carrie Lam, The Chief Executive of the HKSAR (centre) officiated at the Grand Opening Ceremony as Guest of Honour, accompanied by other officiating guests, (from left) Mr Dirk Schraven, CEO of GHK; Mr Brian Cheng, Executive Director of NWS Holdings Limited; Professor Arthur Li, Council Chairman of The University of Hong Kong (HKU); Mr Tsang Yam-pui, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of NWS Holdings Limited; Dato' Mohammed Azlan Bin Hashim, the Chairman of IHH Healthcare Berhad; Professor Sophia Chan, Secretary for Food and Health;Dr Tan See Leng, Managing Director and CEO of IHH Healthcare Berhad and Group CEO and Managing Director of Parkway Pantai; and Professor Paul Tam, Acting President and Vice-Chancellor of HKU.

With the attendance by over 20 media organisations, we shared with members of the media GHK’s key development attained during our first year of service. Dr Tan See Leng, Managing Director and CEO of IHH Healthcare and Group CEO and Managing Director of Parkway Pantai, gave some highlights of our performance including the steady monthly increment of outpatient and inpatient admissions, the number of surgeries we are performing, and the growing take-up rate of medical packages and number of A&E patients. GHK CEO Mr Dirk Schraven also took the opportunity to give an overview of the various new services we have added to our suite of services during the year.
Congratulations to all colleagues at GHK for the smooth and successful first-year operation! A round of applause also goes to all colleagues who rendered their help with greeting guests, hosting hospital tours, introducing our facilities and services to guests, preparing the scrumptious food, guiding patients and visitors and so on.

What patients say about GHK’s medical packages
|
|
|
|
GHK is the first private hospital in Hong Kong to offer all-inclusive medical packages, before we came into operation and since after we have opened doors to patients last year, efforts have been made to explain and promote to patients this new package concept, which aims to bring transparent, high-quality healthcare and peace of mind to the people of Hong Kong.
Over the past year, we have seen a steadily increasing take-up of our packages with more and more patients and doctors showing confidence in the all-inclusive nature of the packages. By and large, feedback from patients who have used our packages has been very positive. Watch this patients' testimonials to see what do some of our patients think of our packages. Please feel free to share this with your friends and family who would like to know more about GHK’s medical packages.

Contributing to the development of medical professionals in Hong Kong
|
|
|
|
GHK has entered another stage of its development with the recent commencement of medical student teaching overseen and conducted by our exclusive clinical partner The University of Hong Kong. As a full-scale private teaching hospital under the unique private-academic framework, GHK works closely with HKU Health System in the areas of clinical services, education and training, and research and development.
During a recent bed-side teaching session at GHK, Dr Yan Chun Hoi, Clinical Associate Professor of Department of Orthopaedics & Traumatology of HKU and Specialist in Orthopaedics & Traumatology of GHK shared with media reporters that teaching in a private hospital setting helps students gain a more diversified exposure. The teaching initially begins with Emergency Medicine and Orthopaedics and Traumatology and will progressively extend to other specialties as the programme develops.
Stating that collaborations between private hospitals and universities take place in many other parts of the world, GHK CEO Mr Dirk Schraven considered that teaching in itself helps improve medical care, since teaching would require adherence to standardised practice and protocols to patient care. The teaching ground at GHK will allow students to learn from a spectrum of diseases which will complement the teaching at public hospitals.

In this special month for GHK, an especially-designed pin was given to all colleagues as a commemorative souvenir for our first anniversary. The heart-shaped pin symbolises how everyone at GHK has taken to heart the mission of providing excellent care to our patients.
Our service would not have been meaningful without our patients’ trust and support. On our birthday, we sent to all inpatients our sweet treats with boxes of chocolates as a token of our thankfulness.
