Message from CEO

Dear colleagues,

The end of the calendar year is approaching and this is already the second last Connect of the year. I would like to take the opportunity to give an update on how our services are developing, how we are building our GHK culture and ask for your attention to the “Innovation Challenge”.

First, as you all know, we implemented a wide range of changes to our services.  We changed our room classes and rates, which now fit much better into the limits of the insurance plans we contracted with, and they are more affordable for our patients. We also introduced over 70 new packages, making the current total to over 120 packages. The addition widens the spectrum of specialties covered and enhances the packages’ applicability to more patients. This is supported by external communication, through which we highlighted how we work with insurance companies such that our packages can either be fully covered or mostly covered. Lastly, we reviewed our pricing based on feedback from many of you and our doctors, to make our offerings more competitive. This goes to the heart of what GHK is trying to accomplish: offer high-quality, affordable services with full price transparency to Hong Kong’s middle-class.

I am pleased to say that it appears that our strategies are working. Since we made the changes, patient volume has been picking up strongly, we are growing by 30-40% each month, and we get very positive feedback from patients and doctors. You have all also referred your friends and family to GHK, using our friends and family promotion. Thanks all for bringing our name out and building our services. Soon, we will expand our services even further, with the opening of our 24/7 A&E on Monday December 4, and hopefully Maternity before Christmas.

Second, we have been working hard to build our GHK culture. We all want GHK to offer the best health care services and make it the best place to work. Many ideas have been proposed and many changes have been initiated. For example, our senior nurses have organised offsite meetings to discuss how to build a more effective culture of teamwork across departments. I discussed the initiatives with them recently and it was very inspiring what they came up with, such as better ways to implement suggestions within the department, easier workflows across SOCs and wards, etc.

On the communication front, we are implementing the ideas to strengthen communication within the hospital. As a first step, the weekly hospital roll call deck has been introduced. While all departments are contributing to provide updates for sharing across the hospital, I would like to ask that we all make the effort to share the decks to all levels of staff and take the time to read the updates to make the initiative meaningful and effective. To improve mutual understanding, tours to our key services and facilities will be on offer to all staff on a regular basis. Please take the opportunity to get a better understanding of the various operations. I have also personally met with six small groups of staff from a wide range of departments, to discuss their ideas, concerns and needs. Together with many other feedback and ideas we received, we will be addressing these ideas and what we did and will do with them during the next town hall meeting. We will be needing all of you to bring all these initiatives to their full potential.

Lastly, I would like to ask for your attention to the “Innovation Challenge”. Innovation is part of the vision that GHK aspires to achieve, it’s also a direction embraced in the wider Parkway Pantai group.   The recently launched “Innovation Challenge” gives us the opportunity to turn ideas into reality. If you have ideas regarding service delivery, patient experience or even innovative healthcare service models, I strongly encourage that you develop your idea, team up with your colleagues and submit your ideas. Next to attaining eternal glory, attractive prizes can be won!

Thank you all for everything you are doing to make GHK the best hospital in Hong Kong!

Dirk Schraven
Chief Executive Officer

Don’t be shy to say “Thank you”

We receive help from colleagues around us every day, but very often, we are just too preoccupied to tell our colleagues the difference they have made and how much we appreciate their support.

The launch of the heart-warming “Thank You Card Initiative” comes as a sweet and convenient way to express your thankfulness to those who have lent us their helping hands. All you have to do is to take the thank-you card that Human Resources Department (HR) has distributed to you, write down your message and basic information of the person who you want to thank and pop it into the collection box at HR (5/F). Delivery is scheduled every Tuesday, with the first two batches already sent to your “angels” over the past weeks. More than 200 cards have been received so far. So don’t be shy, pick up a card today and let your colleagues know their help means something to you!

Hospital tours for you

In an environment where different teams need to work closely together, understanding each other is one of the first steps to building a collaborative culture and providing efficient, seamless services. From end-November onwards, you will be able to visit the different clinical departments to see for yourself their operations and services they provide.

Hosted twice a month, colleagues will be shown around a number of clinical units such as Clinical Laboratory, Radiotherapy & Oncology Centre, Critical Care Unit, inpatient pharmacy, Cardiovascular Laboratory etc. With introductions from respective teams, colleagues will get a clearer picture of the roles of different departments as well as the special features GHK has on offer to patients. You will find it particularly useful if you have only recently joined us. Please get in touch with Service Excellence team to sign up for it.

A state-of-the-art addition to GHK

GHK is proud to have brought to patients our PET-MR (Positron Emission Tomography – Magnetic Resonance Imaging) service on 31 October 2017. The second PET-MR scanner installed in Hong Kong, it is a hybrid positron-emission tomography (PET) scanner integrated with a 3T magnetic resonance (MR) scanner, capable of performing simultaneous PET and MRI scans and providing superior imaging quality that enhances diagnostic accuracy.

PET-MR detects and diagnoses complex malignancies with high level of accuracy, and is particularly instrumental in the investigation of brain tumours, neck tumours and tumours inside the pelvic region.

While the machine yields outstanding clinical images, patients undergoing a PET-MRI scan are exposed to much less radiation than going through a PET-CT scan. The technology also reduces the use of intravenous contrast medium, hence lowering the risk of allergic reaction of some patients who may be allergic to the medium.

Tell CEO what you think

We embrace open and two-way communication at GHK. Since September 2017, our CEO Mr Dirk Schraven has been hosting regular informal sessions with colleagues from clinical and non-clinical departments to learn more about their daily work and address face-to-face some of the issues raised. We are pleased to see the candid and constructive feedback on a range of topics including manpower, workflow, staff benefits, training etc. In a small group made up of different departments, you will have the opportunity to understand others’ work while sharing with them your views.

We look forward to seeing you when it is your turn to join us for this interactive session!

Sneak peek into GHK 2018 calendar

Soon be hot off the press is GHK’s 2018 calendar!  And here is a preview of some of the scenes. Themed around our strategic positioning, each month of the desk calendar briefly describes our unique and high-quality offering, with a selected location within the hospital as background.

Special thanks to our colleagues (some even brought along their baby and kid) who played a crucial part in the production as models!
