Message from CEO

Dear colleagues,

Having learnt that Chinese New Year lasts for 15 days before it "officially" ends, I think I should start off this edition with wishing you all a very prosperous and healthy Year of the Dog!

February was an exciting month for GHK. We made a very good start with our obstetrics and neonatal services which was launched on 23 Feb.  We sold 14 obstetric packages at a baby expo earlier in the month already, and we are seeing more bookings come in.  We also welcomed our first "GHK Baby" on the same day we launched our obstetrics service! Thanks to the team’s effort to get everything prepared and running smoothly, and the support of all other departments concerned – well done!  Our obstetrics department is not huge, but I believe that we do have an edge over the others' - quiet, spacious environment, personalised service, emphasis on mother-baby bonding etc, what we need to do is to spread the words around!

Feb was also the month when the first HIPEC for ovarian cancer in Hong Kong was done at GHK!  Thanks to our highly experienced surgeons, the clinical oncology team and our experienced OT team, we are proud to have made this a successful and smooth experience for our patient. The team will continue to develop OVHIPEC at GHK and I'm confident that more patients will benefit from this advancement as it becomes more and more accessible.
February was also a month in which the flu season posed challenges to all our services; thanks to everyone’s hard work, we were able to deal with the higher patient numbers well. In particular, CNY weekend provided a challenge to our A&E team, which has worked extremely hard to handle the surge of patients, receiving up to double the normal numbers. Supported by many of our other departments, staff and our on-call doctors, they managed to treat all patients adequately, without incurring very long waiting times. A great way to showcase GHK care, very impressive and well done!

As we enter the second year of operation, we need to continue to stay agile and flexible to changing operational needs, though we will at the same time look for stabilising operations by standardising and streamlining processes. We have recently announced the extension of our friends and family discount, so be sure to notify your friends and relatives! We will be facing more challenges as patient volume goes up, and as mentioned at our last town hall, we will actively review manpower needs as we go.

Soon, we will celebrate our 1st year anniversary with a grand opening, for those of you who will be participating in some roles, thank you for your support. I hope to see you all at an internal event for staff to celebrate this milestone!

I look forward to achieving more great results with you in the months ahead.

Dirk Schraven
Chief Executive Officer

Our warmest welcome to the first “GHK Baby”!
Months of hard work and preparation have paid off as GHK’s Obstetrics department opened doors to service expectant mothers on 23 February 2018. Vowed to offer personalised care and unforgettable first moments to mothers and babies, GHK adopts a “Skin to Skin” approach, which includes 24-hour rooming in service, to help bond building between newborns and their parents. Other personalised services include door-to-door transport service for the new families.

On the very same day we launched our service, we welcomed the first “GHK Baby” with great joy and excitement!  We sent our warmest welcome to the baby and congratulations to the family with a mini party. The arrival of our first baby is indeed a wonderful encouragement to the team!

Making Big Splash at Baby Expo

With our Obstetrics department all set and ready to go, GHK made it obstetrics facilities and services known to expectant mothers at the recent Baby Show at the Spring & Child Growth Education Expo. Our Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism Specialist Dr Michele Yuen Mae Ann, also offered advice on gestation al diabetes mellitus to mothers on the spot. Our services received warm response at the Expo and it was indeed encouraging news that 14 maternity packages were sold at the event!

Another great milestone - The first OVHIPEC performed at GHK

With a team of highly experienced specialists in gynaecological oncology, GHK has achieved another great milestone of performing the first hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy for ovarian cancer (OVHIPEC) in Hong Kong, a treatment that leads to significant improvement in reducing recurrence and enhancing overall survival for patients with ovarian cancer, as published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

In essence, HIPEC involves administering chemotherapy immediately following cytoreductive surgery while the patient is still under anaesthesia, and the drug solution is given at a temperature of 40 degree celsius which helps increase overall penetration of the drug into the peritoneal cavity to reach the cancer cells, giving better results compared with intravenous chemotherapy.

Not only is GHK fortunate to have such a dedicated team of doctors with surgical expertise to handle this level of cytoreductive surgery, GHK is also blessed with a highly supportive clinical oncology team which oversees the administration of adjuvant chemotherapy following the OVHIPEC procedure.

This is indeed a very promising start and the team at GHK is confident that we have the right team and expertise in place to continue to further develop OVHIPEC treatments to benefit more patients with ovarian cancer in Hong Kong.

The first town hall in 2018

Active communication with staff has continued. GHK had its first town hall in the year on 9 February 2018 when colleagues heard an overview of the hospital’s strategic priorities set for 2018 from CEO Mr Dirk Schraven. Also shared at the town hall were some of the record highs GHK has recently achieved, particularly in the areas of inpatient growth, operating theatre cases performed, and the number of maternity packages sold at a recent outreach! In response to staff’s concerns on manpower, staff welfare and other operational issues related to stock items, Mr Schraven took the time to address the concerns and shared with colleagues the approach to be taken to help staff tackle these issues and deliver quality and efficient services.   Video of the town hall is available for viewing on the Intranet.

Movie Premier of Saving Heart 90 Minutes

In an effort to increase public awareness of the importance of prompt treatment for life-threatening heart attacks, GHK has recently produced an educational micro-film called - Saving Heart 90 Minutes. A premier of the micro-film was hosted for staff at Gleneagles Bistro with free popcorn! We wish to extend our special thanks to Dr Rex Lam, Dr Tse Tak Sun and Dr Michael Chan who play acted in the video and provided professional advice in the content of the film. A note of thanks also goes to our colleagues who also assisted in the preparation.

Ushering in the Year of the Dog

GHK ushered in the Year of the Dog with fun and engaging celebration with around 300 colleagues on 14 February!

While doing Chinese calligraphy with festive messages is almost considered a must-have at Chinese New Year, we went a little more innovative with promoting GHK’s values “TRUST”. At the calligraphy workshop, colleagues who completed a pair of red couplets on any two of the elements under “TRUST” (Teamwork, Respect, Understanding, Service, and Taking initiative) and were able to name the three key elements under GHK’s vision (Innovation, Transparency, Service) were rewarded with gift vouchers and chocolates. The response was overwhelming that over 250 gifts were given out to our smart ‘calligraphers’!   Colleagues also enjoyed fresh tangerines, which confer good luck and wealth, and other traditional festive sweets and savouries such as sesame balls that symbolise eternal happiness.

A Chinese New Year celebration would not be complete without fortune money! Our CEO Mr Dirk Schraven brought New Year wishes and blessings to all colleagues as he distributed red packets to all departments.

May the New Year bring good health and prosperity to everyone at GHK!
