Dear colleagues,
Our episode of celebrations continued this month: after a successful grand opening, we had a spectacular and spirited annual dinner packed with games, lucky draws and performances. The performances by our nurse and doctors were so impressive, that I think perhaps, we can someday organise a "GHK's Got Talent". It was indeed a night of great fun and a big "thank you" again to the organising committee for staging such a wonderful gathering for us. This sets the standard for future annual dinner events!
What I found particularly memorable about the evening was the point that Dr Tse made about collaboration across different teams and professions during the performance of his band. In healthcare, there is no way that we will be able to take good care of our patients without active collaboration. Also, none of us should think that we are too small to make a contribution. The band's last song about "Gleneagles needs you" was spot-on and a perfect wrap-up of the night.
In our recent town hall meeting, we took some time to discuss the recent news reports on GHK's manpower, staff turnover, remuneration and incidents. I found these reports and comments on social media disturbing as many of the claims are false. I am also disappointed that these have portrayed our colleagues and hospital unfairly and that internal information which is known only to our staff is noted in the reports.
In my recent message to all staff and at town hall, we reiterated the following:
- our manpower complies with DOH requirements, DOH has in fact recently visited us and found our manpower satisfactory
- Q1 nursing staff turnover was about 3% which is in line with market average in post-bonus period
- pay point jump is based on performance; where pay point jump was withheld for three months, it was because of performance reasons
- we have an open reporting culture and mechanism and follow DOH's guidelines on reporting incidents
I fully understand how staff involved in the news reports and social media or in the incidents may have felt. I would like you to know that the hospital will always stand by our staff in both good and bad times, and the incidents being reported in the news should not undermine our culture of open communication and reporting.
While we strive to protect our staff and hospital from these unfavourable circumstances, I am also keen to take the opportunity to learn and improve from these, and I would like to share with you the key action items:
- as our patient volume continues to go up, we are actively hiring more staff to support nurses and ward operation and also more staff for certain area such as oncology
- to prevent reoccurrence of incidents, we are reviewing procedures, policies and practices involved to look for possible flaws
- we are constantly improving workflows to make processes smoother
- we will create improved channels to allow us to better understand and address staff's concerns and possible dissatisfactions at work
I have no doubt that we will overcome this and that GHK will move on and work towards our mission of providing the best care to patients and making GHK a great place to work. But I need your support to do this. I appeal to each and every one of you to highlight issues and concerns to us, and help take action and collaborate to remedy them. With that spirit and with that culture we will make GHK into the great hospital we all desire to build.

Achieving patient safety through open learning
|
|
|
|
To foster continuous improvement in our patient care and nurture a learning culture, our Quality, Safety & Risk Management Department and Chief Operating Officer Dr Alexander Chiu hosted a Patient Safety Forum participated by colleagues from clinical and non-clinical departments including Clinical Laboratory, Nursing, Pharmacy, Medical Affairs and Service Excellence.
During the forum, incidents were used as case studies for discussion with colleagues on what we can learn and improve from these different scenarios. The case studies opened up exchanges of views from different units on the current processes, practices, possible improvements, practical tips on how to manage and communicate with relevant parties in similar situations in future, and most importantly, how to prevent occurrence of any incidents.
