Dear colleagues,
As we drew lessons from last month’s media episodes and clinical incidents, we have moved on in May and managed to put our focus back onto our various priorities including staff recruitment, planning for psychiatry services, and enhancing operations efficiency.
The upward trends of patient volume continued this month and we even noted a few record-highs of inpatient admission. For example, we are seeing a strong increase in oncology cases, so much that our colleagues in the oncology centre are helping out the team in Ward 6B with the administration of chemotherapy – a good example of great collaboration! I attribute this growth to your dedication and good work. Clearly, our patients and doctors appreciate your services and efforts and are coming back for more. Well done!
We also had good reasons to organise some great events this month. We celebrated nurses day on 11 May with well-deserved recognition for our great team of nurses and good food prepared by our dedicated F&B team. Also, we all enjoyed a great hand hygiene event, which was both very informative and good fun – well done Infection Prevention and Control team!
The increasing service demands and our plan to launch the new psychiatry services mean that we need more high-quality and devoted staff to join us. We are actively attracting suitable candidates through different means, including the recently implemented staff referral programme for nurse recruitment. Please do refer good candidates from your networks to join us here at GHK!
We also continued to engage our colleagues with a view to address their concerns and suggestions and improve our services. The recent launch of the antenatal checkup discounts for staff is one of the initiatives implemented in response to staff’s views. Although it won’t be possible to cater to all requests, we are open to feedback and suggestions and your views will be considered carefully. In the recent CEO small groups with colleagues from different departments, I received some candid sharing of problems they often encounter, and at the same time, some good suggestions from colleagues on how to enhance our operations and services. This open sharing of thoughts and taking the initiative to resolve issues is exactly the spirit we need to help us build the culture we desire. We were thus able to immediately implement some of the changes. I appeal to you to keep this spirit up and help improve the hospital every day.

Preparation for hospital-wide accreditation well underway

Since the commencement of the hospital-wide preparation for accreditation of the latest edition of the Evaluation and Quality Improvement Program of The Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS EQuIP6) in December last year, nine small group sessions with different criteria champions have been organised to help our staff champions understand the criteria and prepare for gap analysis of the accreditation scheduled for August.
Leveraging our close partnership with The University of Hong Kong, we were pleased to have invited Prof Joseph Lui, Clinical Director of HKU Health System and one of our surveyor who evaluates and measures compliance with the standards in this exercise, to host a talk focusing on community information, access and admission and care effectiveness on 8 May. During the talk, Prof Lui shared with audience his experience in other accreditation exercises and highlighted the points to note and practical tips on how to go through the thought process and address the criteria closely. More sessions will be organised to guide our champions through the exercise.

The first GHK Hand Hygiene Day
To support the campaign on promoting proper hand hygiene spearheaded by the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) under the Department of Health, our Infection Prevention and Control Department organised the first GHK Hand Hygiene Day on 16 May by staging a number of educational booth games at GHK to promulgate among all staff the key concepts of proper hand hygiene such as the “7 steps for washing hands properly” and the “5 moments of hand hygiene”.
At the kickoff, GHK CEO Mr Dirk Schraven said that GHK will continue to uphold the three main factors of promoting and enforcing hand hygiene at the hospital, which include professional training, managerial support, and behavioural awareness. Mr Schraven, together with some colleagues, also took part in the shooting of a promotional video produced by CHP.

Achieving service excellence through cultivating a culture of teamwork
Great teamwork has a significant impact on the quality of our operations and service delivery. With “Teamwork” being one of GHK’s core values, Service Excellence team hosted two workshops in May to instill in staff the importance of teamwork and provide them with practical tips on how to be a good team member as well as a good leader.
Staff were inspired to use their creativity and collaborate in the fun “Marshmallow game”. Under the challenge of building the highest marshmallow tower using spaghetti sticks, members learned to appreciate how teamwork can bring along effective problem-solving and a more collaborative work environment.
