Dear colleagues,
We have seen that the super typhoon earlier this month has caused damages of different extent in different parts of the city, but with your well-planned preparation, our hospital remained safe and sound. Highly-coordinated teamwork between departments, swift mobilisation of manpower and resources and close communication helped us maintained quality and safe care to our patients and colleagues in a dry and functional building. A round of applause to those of you who were on duty and holding the fort with professionalism during the typhoon, it was definitely a testament of your great team spirit!
Recently, some great activities were organised for Mid-Autumn Festival and I hope you enjoyed the party and lampoon building. My kids loved the lampoons when I brought two home. Very well organised! Some other teams also organised department parties. I also hope you got some rest over the weekend and public holiday and had enjoyable family celebrations.
We all appreciate that in our startup phase, our workflows still need further streamlining. Throughout the year, different initiatives and projects aimed to improve operations and workflow efficiency have been taken. Apart from the Operations Centres, which looks at major cross departmental processes such as discharges, we have also launched the “6S” management approach, which is a quality management methodology that aims at increasing workplace efficiency and employee productivity. “6S” denotes six key steps in process improvement, namely Safety, Sort, Straighten, Shine, Standardise and Sustain. To push this forward, seven colleagues from different departments have been trained to be the “6S facilitators”. Through conducting gap analyses and defining action plans, we are already seeing some very strong results with the projects on Environmental Services storeroom, Radiological Records Dispatching Workflow, and Standardisation of Injection Trolley. I was at the presentation of the first results recently and was very impressed with the results – they were all way beyond expectation – very well done! The “6S” approach will be extended to other areas and I seek your continued support to these such that we can all benefit from a more efficient and effective work environment.
A culture of support and appreciation is one of the cornerstones of the culture we aspire to build. Earlier on our Nursing team initiated the “Ballot of hope” and “Glorious tree” to give encouragement to staff and recognise their great work in patient care, which you have probably all seen in our bistro area. With the “Ballot of hope” at Gleneagles Bistro, you get a random draw of “surprise capsules” which work to give us the little inspiration and motivation we all need. They are small tokens, but I believe that at times, these are exactly the encouragement that we need to keep us going. The same goes with the “Glorious tree”, we are proud of patients’ praises and acknowledgement and these deserve to be shared internally and externally. I look forward to seeing the healthy growth of the “Glorious tree”!
Another aspect related to growing our culture is the Culture Survey which all of you were invited to participate in. After a year of efforts in trying to make a cultural shift, we wanted to see where the gaps are and whether we have been addressing the right issues. Results have been generated and I am pleased to share with you that some encouraging improvements are noted. We will be sharing the key findings with you after consolidating them. The survey has told us the areas in which more work needs to be done and I appeal to your commitment in making even greater progress as we continue to make the shift. In the meantime, I thank you for filling out the surveys and sharing with us your candid feedback.

Fill our workplace with hope and glory
Hope and glory is growing at GHK! Look for the “Ballot of Hope” counter in the Bistro and get a colourful capsule, each containing a motivational message, a link to an inspiring video, candies, and even a surprise gift from our CEO Mr Dirk Schraven!
“Planted” outside the Bistro, the “Glorious Tree” serves to show our happy moments at work and compliments received from patients. Please help nurture our tree by passing your memorable moments at GHK or patients’ praises to a Nurse Manger or Service Excellence team and they will have them displayed on the tree.
Whenever you feel you need a bit of encouragement to keep you going, these corners are always at hand to cheer you up! A note of appreciation to our Nursing colleagues for bringing up these beautiful ideas!

Spreading the appreciative culture
The Thank You Card Campaign was launched last year internally for staff to express their thankfulness to each other. Following last year’s success, we have extended this appreciative culture to our patients and visitors. Specialist outpatient clinics and inpatient wards are encouraged to invite their patients and visitors to fill in the thank-you cards for any staff or teams that they would like to send compliments to. The initiative will be extending to other clinical services progressively.

Earlier on, staff had the opportunity to showcase their creativity in the Service Champion Pin Design Competition. The contest serves as a prelude to the upcoming Service Champion Programme which aims at recognising colleagues who demonstrate excellent service to our patients and visitors. The winning design will be produced into metal badge and awarded to our Service Champions. Look out for the results of the competition!

Sending warm wishes to staff at Mid-Autumn Festival
GHK celebrated its second Mid-Autumn Festival with around 500 colleagues with the cherished tradition of solving lantern riddles! Clever minds were eager to put their wisdom to test and win gifts for cracking the riddles. Colleagues who wanted to have a modern twist to the traditional festival showed off their creativity as they enjoyed the fun of making mini modern lanterns. And of course, the Festival would not be complete without savouring the sumptuous mooncakes prepared for all staff!
