Message from CEO

Dear colleagues,

October was a busy month as we were busy working towards meeting our goals set for the year and starting to plan for next year.

I would like to share with you that with your great efforts, we continued to see promising growth in both inpatient and outpatient volumes in recent weeks. In particular, August was a very good month across all services where we saw as much as a 68% hike in patient volume at Radiotherapy and Oncology Centre, and some 40% jump for Health Screening during the month. Last two weeks were also particularly busy. In addition, we are seeing complex cases come to GHK and it is reassuring that our hospital is able to handle such cases. For example, our A&E team received two cardiac emergency cases on two consecutive nights, which both needed an intervention in the cath lab, and we had several highly complex cases in the OT again. I attribute these impressive results to you all.

Defining and developing clinical focus is one of our strategic priorities for the year. This was partly achieved by having established two new centres in close collaboration with HKU, namely the Spine Centre and the Joint Replacement Centre.  The centres adopt a professor-led and team-based model in which assessments and surgeries are performed by sub-specialists led by professors from HKU. With these centres, we aspire to build reputation and expertise for GHK in orthopaedic services. This is only part of the bigger plan and we will continue to further develop our clinical services with HKU in other specialties such as oncology.

Much work was done in the last month on a project to shorten our discharge time. A team from many departments tested a number of workflow changes and they appear to be effective. It is our aim to limit discharge time to maximum two hours after doctor’s discharge decision.

In addition, you will be pleased to know that GHK’s commitment in striving for continuous improvement is recognised at a group level.  In the recent IHH Quality Summit held in Kuala Lumpur, several GHK projects were recognised and featured, including the GHK’s improvement project “Creating a safe and efficient transfusion service”, and our initiatives taken to improve the credentialing and privilege granting process of GHK Medical Board. Congratulations and well done to Clinical Laboratory who led the improvement project!  We also shared at the Summit the best five catches of near-miss cases at GHK. “Thank you!” to colleagues who contributed to these quality improvement initiatives. These are excellent examples of how different departments can play a significant role in raising quality levels and are important steps in making GHK one of the best hospitals in the city.

Expanding our customer base has always been at the top of our agenda, and efforts to promote our services and reach out to different stakeholders continued during the month. Other than participating in a maternity expo to introduce our services to expectant parents, we continued to reach out to our local catchment area through a road show for the Island South community. Separately, we worked to build networks with our one of target client groups by inviting CEOs and top business leaders in Hong Kong to a health talk cum networking event hosted by our parent group IHH Healthcare. We expect that this will further help to improve the awareness of our hospitals amongst Hong Kong residents.

We also need your help to actively get more people know about GHK and try our services. So please be our brand ambassadors and spread the word about our excellent services on offer!

A celebration of continuous improvement!

Congratulations to GHK on winning the IHH Quality Award 2018 at the latest Quality Summit hosted by IHH Healthcare!

Spearheaded by our Clinical Laboratory, the award-winning project aimed to create a safe and effective transfusion service by ensuring a safe red cell stock in blood bank for blood transfusion and minimising wastage of red cells by June 2018. Click here for details of the project.

At the Summit, GHK also presented and received an award for the initiatives taken to improve the credentialing and privilege granting process of the GHK Medical Board. Other GHK submissions made included the best five catches of near-miss cases.

Themed Partnerships That Fly, the Quality Summit was held on 5 October in Kuala Lumpur in which participants engaged themselves in stimulating discussions and presentations on the topic of quality improvement. Bringing together more than 400 colleagues from Malaysia, Singapore, India, Brunei and Hong Kong, the Quality Summit is one of the most important events in IHH’s corporate calendar to celebrate and share among staff quality improvement efforts in different markets.

A round of applause to all colleagues who were involved in these quality improvement initiatives!

Reaching out to new and expectant parents

Since its launch early in the year, our obstetrics services have been well liked by families and many good comments on our staff and services have been noted on parenting social media platforms. Riding on this positive word-of-mouth, we participated in the 4th edition of The Hong Kong Maternity + Baby Event on 13 October 2018 during when some 200 new and expectant parents found our free baby massage demonstrations and lactation consultations very informative and helpful. Some of them also grabbed the chance to enrol in our obstetrics packages on the spot to enjoy an exclusive discount! Our other infant and children-related services, including paediatric services, vaccination package, and student eye check-up services, were also introduced.

Top business leaders on board the journey to a healthier future

It could be a luxury for many top executives to find time to take care of their own health while working round the clock.  To empower these leaders to manage long-term healthy living, IHH Healthcare, GHK’s parent group, extended its signature FutureHealth, Now: CEO breakfast series to Hong Kong earlier this month, after its first launch in Singapore and Malaysia in 2017.

During the exclusive event, Dr Ross Walker, a practising cardiologist and one of the most sought after preventive health experts in Australia, gave insightful sharing on health optimisation and healthy ageing to a group of CEOs and country heads in Hong Kong. The occasion also provided a great opportunity for GHK to get connected with business leaders from a spectrum of industries.

Stay fit and healthy with GHK yoga

For four consecutive weeks in October, our colleagues experienced the healing power of after-work yoga! Organised by GHK Club, the course helps colleagues relieve tense muscles, achieve work-life balance as well as build friendships across departments. A note of appreciation to Ms Joyce Ma, our Physiotherapist and a certified yoga instructor, who kindly volunteered to coach 15 colleagues to improve fitness and de-stress through yoga after a day of hard work.

GHK Club is keen to bring to you a variety of fun activities to foster internal bond-building. If you have any great ideas, do share them with the organising committee!
