Message from CEO

Dear colleagues,

Following the strong growth in patient volume seen in the last quarter, we continued to record clear growth momentum in January across many services including A&E, day cases and inpatient admissions, SOCs, surgeries etc. These great achievements did not come by luck, but are hard-earned results from all of you who have gone beyond the call of duty. I am aware that the recent flu surge has meant increased work for many of you. I thank you for your professionalism in making sure that processes continue to run smoothly and patients receive the best care. My heartfelt appreciation to you all!

We are keen to build on this promising trend, to this end, we have been busy drawing up plans for this year and beyond. Let me share with you the key goals GHK is set to achieve in the short and medium terms as follows:
  • Attain the target manpower levels and create the best staff development environment
  • Achieve safe and superior outcomes for patients and improve workflows for staff
  • Improve service quality and build customer and doctor loyalty
  • Grow key customer segments and channels and achieve profitable growth

Initiatives to achieve some of the above goals have in fact started last year. One of the frequently-raised concerns from staff I met in my regular tea sessions was the long processing time for patient discharge. To address this issue, we have piloted a plan to improve inter-departmental workflows to shorten the turn-around time of inpatient discharge. Notable reductions in processing time at different stages of the process was attained during the pilot. We will extend this improvement plan to all wards and will monitor the outcomes and tune our actions, until we meet the target of having 70% of inpatient discharge completed in two hours.

Enhancing resource management is one of the means we will adopt to help achieve our financial goals this year. Colleagues from different departments have formed a workgroup to help identify the key items on which cost efficiency can be improved. Initiatives will span across different areas which include reducing colour and single-sided printing, reducing the use of plastic lunchboxes, rationalising our purchasing orders etc. The improvement plan on energy consumption has reaped some good results. Read on to see the saving we have made! Meanwhile, I call for your support to the different initiatives the workgroup will roll out, and if you have any suggestion on making GHK a more cost-efficient and greener hospital, please drop your ideas to csw@gleneagles.hk.

The group-wide initiative Innovation Challenge is back! Last year, our NaviG team was commended a merit award for the proposal to integrate mobile applications with telemedicine wearable sensors. Living up to GHK’s aspiration to bring about innovation in private health care, I strongly encourage you to team up with colleagues to let your innovative ideas be turned into action plans to improve services of GHK or even the wider hospital group.

We should all be proud of the sound foundation you have built in the past two years, and with such a great team, I am confident that we will achieve more fantastic progress and results as one team. Chinese New Year is just a few days away, I wish you all much happiness and prosperity in the Year of the Pig!

Going on a hike for green education

A group of GHK doctors and staff, including our CEO Mr Dirk Schraven, formed three teams to compete for the 10-km “Medical Services Cup” at the Green Power Hike to raise funds for a greener environment on 12 January 2018. Our supporting team with colleagues from various departments cheered for the teams and other participants, in addition to making donation for Green Power’s work in environmental education. We look forward to having your participation in future!

Cast your vote to live GHK’s supportive culture!

With much pride and excitement, we would like to let you know that our Ms Cecilia Chan, Nurse Manager of Training and Development Department, has been shortlisted to compete for the Gold Award under the “Spirit in Nursing – Senior Category” of the Healthcare Spirit Awards 2018! Cecilia is the only finalist in the category who is from the private sector.

Organised by South China Morning Post Publishers Ltd in collaboration with the Association of Hong Kong Nursing Staff and other social and educational institutions, the annual Healthcare Spirit Awards recognise excellence and extraordinary efforts of healthcare practitioners in serving patients, colleagues, and society as a whole.

The winners will be selected by a judging panel drawn from professional associations, universities and leading healthcare figures, but our support will also count for 10% of the total score.

As one supportive and appreciative team, please click here now to vote to express your appreciation to Cecilia! Public voting is open until 10 February 2019.

Be surprised by the difference you can make!
Since April 2018, our Plant Operations Department has spearheaded a number of energy saving initiatives to reduce electricity consumption across different areas in the hospital. From April to December 2018, we managed to make a saving of around HK$4.4M of energy cost for the same period of 2017!

The measures rolled out included adjusting room temperature in major facilities to 22-24°C, switching off air-conditioning system, lighting, escalators and lifts in certain areas in non-business hours, adopting manual control to maximise chiller efficiency etc.

Other resource-conserving initiatives are in the pipeline to make our hospital more cost-efficient. Many improvements can be achieved just by taking small steps and changing our consumption habits. You will be surprised by the difference that you can make!

Innovation Challenge is back!

Training for future doctors continues

In partnership with the Emergency Medicine Unit of The University of Hong Kong, a three-hour wound management workshop was held on 9 January at GHK. A total of 30 fifth-year medical students learned and practised various knit-tying and suturing skills under the guidance of GHK’s specialist in Emergency Medicine, Dr Ronald Wong Tat-ming. This forms parts of the clerkship for students who have been receiving training in Accident & Emergency, Orthopaedics & Traumatology and Obstetrics & Gynaecology since 2018. More training collaboration is being planned!
