Message from CEO

Dear colleagues,

March was a busy month, with some new services launched and of course a very fun annual dinner! Shortly after we opened our Behavioural Ward at the end of February, we launched our first satellite clinic in Central which has been operating smoothly so far. We also opened our Doctors’ Lounge on 2/F, offering a cosy and pleasant space where doctors can take a break and connect with each other. I hope that the lounge will foster our building of a closer-knit doctors’ community at GHK.

On GHK’s 2nd anniversary, 21 March, I and my management colleagues first had the pleasure of baking cookies for you and serving you lunch, and after that, we had our annual dinner to thank you all for the contribution you have made to the accomplishments we achieved during the year. Those of you who joined the dinner will agree with me that it was a superb, fun evening with great atmosphere. I was told that some of our new nurses thought it was the “craziest” and “most joyful” annual dinner they have ever been to, and some doctors regretted that they didn’t make it to join us!  It was great that so many of you dressed up in the 70s & 80s outfits and you all looked fantastic! “Well done” to the organising committee for staging such a great event for us. Kudos to our colleagues and doctors as well for their terrific performances.   I hope we all can keep up this spirit of positivism and joy in our daily work together.

On the clinical front we continued to introduce innovative patient services, which further build our clinical capabilities. Just a couple of weeks ago, our endoscopy team did their first Electromagnetic Bronchoscopy Navigation (EBN), which was the first in Hong Kong private hospitals, and several more cases have already been performed and booked. Since the first ovarian HIPEC in Hong Kong was done at GHK last year, the HIPEC team has recently performed the 15th procedure. We also took on a few complex paediatric oncology and other complex paediatric cases which were new to GHK. While these complex procedures are challenging for our staff, I think we should be proud that we were able to handle all these well, and these are testaments to patients’ confidence in our clinical team and our hospital.

At our recent town hall meeting we shared with you the initiatives we will take to address the key improvement areas identified in the Employee Engagement Survey. Critical is that we further ramp up our manpower to address the growing patient load. We are going all-out in the recruitment market, but we will need your help to refer further suitable candidates to GHK, especially in nursing (OT, ICU and various wards). Among the other priority areas, I would like to draw your particular attention to the goal to create a more collaborative culture. I cannot stress enough the importance of having an open and collaborative culture to our hospital. Not only will this have a direct impact on our service quality, but it also will shape how good a workplace GHK is for every one of us. I appeal to you all to help us make our collaborative culture thrive and make GHK a place where everybody enjoys working in.

Dirk Schraven
Chief Executive Officer

Thanking staff on GHK’s 2nd anniversary!

GHK thanked staff for their continuous support and contribution to the hospital on its 2nd birthday with sweet treats! Colleagues were pleasantly surprised by the presence of GHK’s management team who put on aprons and gloves to serve them lunch at Bistro. Staff were also served hand-made anniversary cookies which the team prepared on an earlier day.

The team put great efforts in learning to make doughs, cut out the shape of “2”, and decorate the products to ensure that colleagues will enjoy every bite of the cookies!

Our CEO and his team all turned out to be excellent at serving our colleagues despite special requests such as “more sauce please”, “can I have less rice?” and so on!

A retro blast at Annual Dinner 2019

Our annual dinner, staged on GHK’s 2nd anniversary on 21 March, was a night of superb entertainment and great fun! Themed “Hong Kong in the 70s & 80s”, the fantastic night was enjoyed by over 850 staff and doctors and our partners NWS Holdings and The University of Hong Kong.

Staff and doctors dressed themselves up in mini-skirts, chunky heels, ponchos, flared pants, huge bow ties, tight and tucked-in shirts, fabulously accessorised their looks with chokers, headbands, beads and feathers! Staff were spoiled with games, lucky draws, cash prizes and performances by our talented colleagues and doctors. Congratulations again to the Quality, Safety & Risk Management Department and the Nursing Training & Development Department for winning the Best Dress Awards!

The dinner was brought to its climax when our CEO and heads of departments hit the dance floor with their well-rehearsed retro dance performance! And once again, our doctors’ rock band drew a huge crowd of exhilarated fans to the front of the stage as the band played and sang the greatest hits of the 70s and 80s!

Let’s take a lookback at the joyful moments of the evening!

A cosy space for doctors to refresh and recharge 24/7

Located on 2/F of Tower B, the Doctors’ Lounge was opened on 1 March, offering a cosy and relaxing space for doctors to take a break in between sessions and surgeries. With this lounge tastefully fitted with comfy sofa and chairs, a television, computer facilities, charging ports, complemented by light food and drinks, doctors can now refresh themselves amid the hustle and bustle of their days at GHK. The Lounge has been well liked by doctors and is becoming a place at GHK where doctors gather and connect with each other!

A note of thanks to our Plant Operations and Food & Beverage teams for their superb efficiency in setting up the lounge and preparing the delightful choices of refreshments for our doctors!

The First Town Hall Meeting in 2019

GHK had its first town hall meeting of 2019 on 20 March during which our CEO Mr Dirk Schraven, together with relevant team heads, gave staff a general review of the first quarter of the year and highlighted the various new services and initiatives, business development, workflow-related improvements and milestones achieved during the period.

Among the topics covered were the results of Parkway Pantai’s Employee Engagement Survey. With “Working conditions and occupational health”, “Sustainable engagement” and “Working relationships” being indicated by staff as the least favourable areas for GHK, Human Resources Department explained the action plans to be taken to address these gaps. Separately, Health Information & Records Department also showcased the cross-team improvement project implemented to shorten the turn-around time (TAT) for discharged patients’ medical records to be uploaded to the hospital management system. The project reaped an extraordinary improvement of shortening the average TAT from 50 days to 10 days!

We also took the opportunity to show appreciation to the top three of our staff who demonstrated excellent service and received the largest number of patients’ compliments in the fourth quarter of 2018. A round of applause to our three Service Champions!

We Share, We TRUST

Meet Natalie, our nurse at the Critical Care Unit, who decorated the unit’s staff room with the TRUST table mats. Learn a bit about her life at GHK and what keeps her going in her demanding role.

How long have you been with GHK? Since when that you knew you wanted to be a nurse?

Natalie: I joined GHK as a registered nurse in December 2016. I decided to develop a career in nursing after I graduated from secondary school as I liked the idea of taking care of others and the good career prospect that came with it.

Are any of the TRUST values that your find particularly important/relevant to your work?

Natalie: I think all five values are very relevant to our work at ICU and to nursing work in general.
Teamwork is particularly important when you are taking care of complex cases or critically-ill patients. I guess service attitude is high on the list too because you can only do well when you serve with your heart. Working at ICU, we also need to be proactive in taking action to safeguard patients’ well-being.

What is the most memorable thing that has happened at GHK?

Natalie: I took care of a cancer patient who had been hospitalised for more than three months. It gave me great satisfaction helping him through the journey and seeing him recover steadily. He was eventually well enough to be discharged. I felt that the patient also worked hard with us as a team, for he also persevered and made great efforts in these months.

What keeps you passionate about your job?

Natalie: I enjoy chatting with patients to understand their needs and feelings, and along the way, giving them physical and mental support. I think this is an important part of the journey to recovery. Working in a private setting is more motivating than in the public as I can spend more time on patients.

What would you say to your fellow colleagues as an encouragement?

Natalie:  I have been working here before the hospital opened and have witnessed the many improvements that have been made since the early days. I was once upset by constant changes such as changes to policies and others, but looking back, I’ve come to realise that these were needed to make things better and I believe that’s the process for any new establishments. I think it makes sense that a new hospital needs more time to reach its full potential. Like me, you have chosen to be here with this new “baby”, so let’s have faith in what you have decided to take on!
