Dear colleagues,
Let me start off by welcoming Dr Kenneth Tsang who has joined us as Chief Operating Officer earlier this month. Dr Tsang oversees the hospital’s daily clinical operations and drives the continuous operational and clinical quality improvement, in addition to leading several key departments. Separately, Dr Victoria Tan will continue with her role as part-time Chief Medical Officer and be the liaison between doctors practising at GHK and the hospital’s administration, while managing Quality and Safety, medical incidents and complaints. Please extend your full support to them as we continue to build an even stronger GHK team.
We have achieved another important milestone as our Clinical Laboratory completed the on-site assessment for the HOKLAS Laboratory Accreditation with no major non-conformities found. Well done to Laboratory and other teams for collaborating actively for the on-site assessment, it was a demonstration of great teamwork! Official granting of accreditation is expected in July should there be no major adverse comments from the surveyors on our rectification plans. Our next challenge on accreditation is the ACHS on-site survey scheduled for November. Small group sessions and several task forces are in place to help departments prepare their submissions and address some of the key topics which need more work. Please make the best use of these sessions and task forces to seek advice on addressing the comments the surveyors raised during last year’s readiness survey.
Phase one of the expanded Cardiology Clinic is almost completed and will come into operation in early May. Great job to POD, Nursing and other teams who have been involved in making sure that the project progressed as scheduled. As we move onto phase two, expansion of the Health Screening Centre will also kick off shortly. With a space double the size of the previous clinics, which will offer greater comfort for patients, our staff and doctors, I am confident that patients will enjoy a better customer experience.
Congratulations to our nurse manager Cecilia Chan and Nursing team for being awarded the Certificate of Recognition in the Healthcare Spirit Awards 2018, after being shortlisted from numerous strong candidates from across the public and private sectors! The award is a testament to our staff’s dedication to great patient care and professionalism which is certainly the spirit that we uphold at GHK.
My appreciation also goes to our two teams for taking part in the group-wide initiative Innovation Challenge, they are “Margarita” by Critical Care Unit and “SWAT” by Environmental Service, IT, Day Ward, Business Office and Clinical Laboratory. The “Margarita” team proposed an “Intelligent Parkway Orientation System (i-Pos)” to relieve anxiety of patients and family members over ICU admission by offering orientation to the ICU environment, monitoring systems, treatment regime etc. The “SWAT” team proposed a rapid automated portering information system (RAPIS) to improve the porter service by reducing waiting time and eliminating communication problems. Although these ideas did not get shortlisted, the initiation and thoughtfulness in driving innovation and improvement is definitely well appreciated! We will further look into these to see how they can be developed into reality at GHK.
One challenge we are currently facing as our patient volume is growing is the shortage of inpatient beds. While our nursing and HR teams are working hard to recruit more staff, especially in nursing, to deal with the situation, it is not enough yet to provide adequate bed capacity. Please rest assured we are doing all we can to improve the situation. But I would also like to appeal to all colleagues to help refer and attract more staff to GHK, especially in nursing. We need this joint effort and collaborative spirit to further build up our GHK team, especially now that our patients, doctors and nursing colleagues need it the most. I hope I can count on all of you!
Building this collaborative culture is one of the hospital’s strategic priorities. We do so not only because we strive to deliver excellent service, but also because we are committed to making GHK a great workplace for everyone. We will be launching another culture-building series this year, kicking off next month with the GHK Role Model Nomination Programme which aims to recognise desired behaviours. Please help us build this collaborative and appreciative culture by nominating the Role Models around you who have lived the TRUST values!

Engaging doctors and stakeholders as
GHK launches the city’s first private Behavioural Health ward

|
|
Following the opening of our Behavioural Health ward (Daylily Ward) in late-February, we have recently organised an information night for psychiatrists, relevant stakeholder groups and non-governmental organisations in the community to introduce to them our inpatient services designed for patients with mild mental health conditions. A media announcement event was also hosted to inform the public of the high-quality, accessible and safe specialist inpatient service we offer that was not available in the private sector. The media was also toured around the ward during when safety installations and anti-ligature designs were introduced.
Safety installations and anti-ligature designs are in place at the Daylily Ward, including collapsible bed curtain, wall-mounted call bell, locked TV cupboard and electric socket, handleless doorknob, ligature-resistant showerhead and hand rail, and anti-collision protection.

The GHK’s Vision, Mission & Values (VMV) series is back! To build a collaborative culture as set out in the hospital’s Strategic Plan, this May, we will be launching a “GHK Role Models Nomination Programme” to recognise colleagues who have proactively demonstrated desired behaviour and lived the TRUST values at work.
Everyone is welcome to submit his/her nomination and vote for the best GHK Role Models. If you have identified a colleague, or a team, who has demonstrated one or all of the TRUST values at work, simply fill out an online nomination form with a brief description of the good story and you will stand a chance to win a joint prize of HK$1,000 cash coupons with the winner (HK$1,500 cash coupons for team nomination)!
Stay tuned for more details on the nomination!

We proudly share with you that our Ms Cecilia Chan, Nurse Manager of Training and Development Department, has been awarded the Certificate of Recognition under the “Spirit in Nursing – Senior Category” of the Healthcare Spirit Awards 2018! Cecilia was the only finalist from the private sector in the category.
Organised by South China Morning Post in collaboration with the Association of Hong Kong Nursing Staff and other social and educational institutions, the annual Healthcare Spirit Awards recognises excellence and extraordinary efforts of healthcare practitioners in serving patients, colleagues, and society as a whole.
Please put your hands together again for Cecilia! And may this great spirit of caring for patients continue to spread and grow at GHK!

Nurturing future nursing professionals
|

|
In addition to training medical students and specialist trainees, GHK has been collaborating closely with The University of Hong Kong (HKU) in training student nurses and enrolled nurses through the Nurse Student Clinical Placement Program and the conversion programme for enrolled nurses.
At the HKU School of Nursing Annual Pinning Ceremony on 20 March, our Deputy Director of Nursing, Ms Betty Tang, presented the pins to the graduates as an honourable guest to wish them all the best as they embark on their journey as professional nurses.
We take pride in contributing to the development of medical professionals in Hong Kong as these training programmes continue to thrive!
