Dear colleagues,
In many ways, GHK is a pioneer in providing healthcare services in Hong Kong. Our recent winning of the “Management Innovation of the Year” Award under the Healthcare Asia Awards 2019 is a testament to our effort in this aspect. The award specifically honours our steps towards bringing change in private health care in Hong Kong, such as our private-academic model, all-inclusive packages, automated drug dispensing system and two-bedded standard rooms. While we celebrate this regional award, I would like to attribute this to all of you as you are the pioneers who have helped GHK earn this recognition. Pioneering is hard work and not always easy, but is being recognised and applauded by the outside community.
In GHK, we strive to ensure patient safety through prevention, training, incident and outcome reporting and continuous improvement. We have recently started our second Patient Safety Survey not only to collect staff opinions regarding patient safety issues, incidents and near misses reporting, but also to review how effective the measures have been in addressing the weaker areas identified in last year’s survey. For example, we have instituted task forces to address fall prevention and patient identity management, further increased transparency and sharing of incidents, and instituted a “whistle blower policy” to enable all staff to report on any unsafe or unethical practices. I call for your support in filling in this hospital-wide survey to help GHK improve on its the quality and safety of patient care and in the longer run, build a strong patient safety culture.
In the last Group-wide Employee Engagement Survey, staff’s work condition came up as one of the areas for improvement. In addition to collecting and addressing staff’s feedback through our regular channels, we have also established a cross-department workgroup which focuses on discussing and resolving work conditions/environment-related matters. I am glad that representatives from different departments have been providing constructive feedback and suggestions on the issues raised. We have identified over 20 improvement initiatives which we are implementing over the next months; we will share more details in the next town hall and other channels.
You probably would have noted the recent announcement of IHH Healthcare, our parent company, on Dr Tan See Leng, Group Managing Director and CEO, retiring from his positions in IHH later this year. Dr Tan has been one of the key founders and leaders in the establishment of GHK. As Chairman of GHK’s Board, Dr Tan has been giving GHK and its management team much guidance and counsel on the hospital’s strategic development and challenges it faces. For all his leadership, I send our deepest gratitude to Dr Tan on behalf of all GHK staff. His successor will be ex-GHK Acting CEO Dr Kelvin Loh who is intimately familiar with and a great supporter of GHK. While transition at Group level will be effected, please be assured that GHK will continue with its operation and work towards its goals as per normal, delivering quality service and patient care as it has always been.

Cardiology Clinic - new look, greater comfort
|
|
|
Part of our expanded Cardiology Clinic has come into operation with a new look earlier this month!
Located on 1/F, former location of the Health Screening Centre, the expanded Cardiology Clinic had its soft opening on 6 May. Upon completion of the entire expansion expected in around August 2019, the clinic will be double the size of the previous one, offering greater comfort and better experience for our patients, staff and doctors. Credit to Nursing, POD and colleagues involved for making sure that the clinic opened as scheduled and patients continued to experience quality service during transition to the new location.

Patient Safety Culture Survey 2019 is back!
|
|
|
|
With the aim to look for continuous improvements in patient safety culture at GHK, the hospital-wide Patient Safety Culture Survey 2019 has started on 20 May. Subsequent to the three least favourable areas identified in the 2018’s survey, namely “Non-punitive response to error”, “Staffing level” and “Communication openness”, a number of initiatives have been taken to address the gaps:
Now that the Patient Safety Culture Survey 2019 is ready and your participation is critical to help us know whether the measures have been effective and what other areas need to be looked into, please fill in the survey from now til 9 June to help GHK make itself an even better hospital!

We Share, We TRUST
Meet Cecilia, our Nurse Manager of Training and Development Department. Learn more about her passions for teaching and endeavours to care for patients.
How would you describe yourself?
Cecilia: I think I’m highly adaptive to new environment, partly because I studied in different places such as Canada, Singapore and Taiwan. This has helped build my ability to relate to the needs of people who try to adapt to a new environment and to help them in some ways.
Would you share with us more about your clinical background?
Cecilia: I’ve been a nurse for more than 20 years, and before becoming a clinical instructor, I had worked in a number of elderly home and hospitals, serving in diversified fields such as the medical unit, cardiac centre, intensive care unit, operating theatre etc.
What inspired you to change your role from a practising nurse to a clinical instructor?
Cecilia: I first had my hands on QSR and ACHS when I was working in another two private hospitals. During that period I developed an interest in looking at the root causes of different issues, coming up with recommendations to frontline operation such that patients can receive better services in the long run. Switching to teaching has given me a great sense of satisfaction.
What do you see as your greatest achievement in your life or your career as a nurse?
Cecilia: There was a time when I was responsible for coordinating clinical placement and there was a nurse student who had failed an exam for a few times by the clinical mentors. It had come to her last shot that if she failed again, she would have to quit. I really wanted to help this student as I saw the potential in her. So right after my work duty and before the exam, I helped her with her preparation. She appreciated my support and worked really hard. She eventually passed the exam!
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
Cecilia: I enjoy spending quality time with my son and husband, watching TV and trying out delicious food. Also, I have liked fishing since I was a kid, it has helped me become a patient person, which is important for my work. I also have regular church services for teenagers.
If you are to thank someone who has made a significant or positive impact on you, who would that be?
Cecilia: There are a few persons that I am grateful for, my parents who raised me up with lots of encouragement and compliments, and my current and former supervisors who gave me chances to develop my career.
Is there anything in particular that you would like to say or share with our fellow colleagues?
Cecilia: “Never give up”. Even if you can’t see something now, it doesn’t mean that it won’t happen in future. GHK is growing and there are more opportunities to be explored. I truly believe that GHK is a hospital for long-term career development as it values personal development!
