Message from CEO

Dear colleagues,

July was a month of turbulence in Hong Kong and the continuing demonstrations have meant that we need to stay alert to possible rise in patients who may need more urgent treatments. Our principle remains that in all circumstances, we provide all the required care to our patients based on their clinical needs as our top priority, regardless of their backgrounds or circumstances. Noting that demonstrations are planned for different places in the city, we’ll be sure to take precautions as necessary. My appreciation to our A&E team and other frontline colleagues for keeping up your professionalism and proactiveness as always. We will continue to monitor the situation closely, and make sure that GHK will continue to be a safe place for our patients and staff.

In early July we saw the launch of our Spine Centre which adopts a HKU professorial-led, multidisciplinary-team model that allows our highly experienced team to treat complex spine conditions. This is another step forward in building our capacity and reputation in performing highly-specialised procedures in certain sub-specialties. In that light, I send my congratulations to the team of specialists and nurses for having performed a successful surgery for a child patient who suffered from severe scoliosis and other deformities. This is also one of the first charity cases GHK has undertaken in collaboration with a local organisation, something we intend to keep on doing. Credits also go to our different teams under Nursing for taking great care of a patient who had a pre-term delivery of a baby and sequential ovarian tumour removal in the same session. In both the spine and maternity cases, our Nursing team exhibited exceptional professionalism and teamwork which were critical to the management of patients with complicated conditions.  Great job to our nurses, we are proud of you!

As we ramp up, we feel and hear the need to recruit more frontline staff, such as in Nursing and in Allied Health. Please rest assured we are trying our utmost to attract more staff. For instance, we had a successful recruitment event late June, from which we were able to recruit a good number of nurses and HCAs. On top of the various efforts made in attracting qualified professionals in different disciplines, our Human Resources team has significantly shortened the overall recruitment processing lead time. Apart from several on-site recruiting activities, the normal recruitment process from CV shortlisted to final offer extended is now less than 20 days. We have also conducted various focus groups with clinical staff to gain a better understanding of how we can further improve the work environment at GHK. Valuable suggestions were given, ranging from workplace and workflow improvements to cross-department collaboration and leadership. We will be sure to prioritise and follow up and will communicate with you what we will be implementing in the course of next month.

We have continued to actively follow up on the other suggestions and concerns that have been raised by our staff in our regular small group exchanges and through other channels. We are happy to report that we will be raising the compensation for our clinical support staff by 8%, as of the month of July, as recently communicated. As another example, with respect to the processing time for staff’s reimbursement of expenses, Finance team has now implemented a mechanism to ensure that claims submitted by HODs by 25th of the month will be reimbursed to staff by the middle of the month that follows. We are also intensively speaking to our insurers to simplify the pre-approval process for outpatient care, and they have agreed to review it, which will hopefully mean a simplified workflow for our SOC staff. The small group sessions with CEO are arranged every month, but this doesn’t mean it’s the only channel. The mailbox ghktownhall@gleneagles.hk is another platform where you can have your voice heard and I encourage every one of you to make use of these channels to communicate your views and feedback on topics that are of concern to you. It is through active interactions that we can work together to make GHK a great workplace for all of us.

Helping patients with complex conditions via our Spine Centre
A media announcement event was hosted to launch our Spine Centre which offers comprehensive and personalised treatments for a spectrum of complex spine conditions in both adults and children.

The Spine Centre is managed by a team of professional and highly experienced HKU professors and spine sub-specialists. The team adopts a multidisciplinary approach that combines academic research with clinical experience.  Effective and comprehensive clinical protocol the team has developed over the years has allowed patients to receive all-rounded and accurate assessment and diagnosing, which are crucial to the formulation of the most appropriate treatment.

For more information on two of the complex spine cases our Spine Centre has recently performed on, check out this media release.
Kudos to our Nursing teams!

Extraordinary teamwork and high standard of care were demonstrated by our Nursing teams in OT, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics, Obstetrics and Oncology in two complex surgeries recently performed at GHK.

Our Paediatrics and Orthopaedics Nursing teams took care of a child patient who suffered from severe scoliosis and underwent a spinal correction surgery. On top of professional care throughout the journey, our nurses also gave lots of warmth and emotional support to cheer up the young child who was upset with the discomfort experienced. The teams were pleased to see the child leaving GHK in a better condition and with a happy face. A video capturing the patient’s treatment journey will be on GHK Facebook page in due course. Stay tuned!

Kudos also goes to our Obstetrics and Oncology Nursing teams for taking great care of a patient who had a pre-term delivery of a baby and sequential ovarian tumour removal in the same session. Our nurses and lactation consultants provided extra care and attentiveness to help the patient recover and make sure that the baby in NICU received the most appropriate care.

We would not have been able to manage these cases with such high standards and success without the exceptional professionalism and dedication from our nurses. To our nurses, thank you for being our patients’ guardian angels!
Creativity unleashed!

Organised by GHK Club, the Art Jamming Workshop saw our GHK art talent exhibiting their creative minds . Around 30 colleagues joined this inspiring activity and unleashed their creativity in making personalised designs on paintings, canvas bags and tees. Look out for more fun activities from which you can also make new friends at GHK!

Meet Kam, our Head Chef of Food & Beverage Department. Learn more about his passions for preparing quality food and his life at GHK.

Since when that you knew you wanted to be a chef? Was it your dream job?

When I graduated from school, I had two options, one as a chef and one as a graphic designer. I really enjoyed drawing, but then I realised that I could apply my design skills while creating dishes for customers as a chef, so I choose to develop my career in catering.

What inspired you to have left a renowned hotel and joined GHK?

It wasn’t an easy decision to leave a renowned hotel, but I wanted new challenges. It was like learning from the beginning and building a foundation at GHK. For instance, it can sometimes be difficult to strike a balance between making delicious food and ensuring that it is nutritious. It is also important to observe patients’ dietetic requirements and food allergy history.

What was the most interesting/memorable thing that has ever happened to you at work?

It will have to be the time when a patient’s wife, a Buddhism vegan, who were unable to choose any right food from our standard menu.

Having worked in a hotel, I have developed the skills to be customer-oriented and understand their needs. My team and I took the initiative to meet this madam in person, tried to understand her requirements and preferences, and made a few delicious dishes for her. Compliment from the patient was very motivating for the team!

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time (apart from cooking)?

I enjoy playing football, especially with my team. I also enjoy spending quality time with my family.

What do you enjoy most working at GHK?

GHK provides me with the opportunity to groom colleagues and develop their interests in cooking, giving them guidance and inspirations. With a Tiger Prawn dish, our colleagues won the Gold Award under the Modern Chinese Cuisine Challenge Hot Cooking category as a team, at an international culinary competition. I also enjoy creating new dishes for colleagues and patients and supporting corporate events.

What do you see as your biggest challenge working at GHK?

I found making festive delights, such as rice cakes and moon cakes etc, challenging because I had never handled similar tasks before. Yet, I believe in the saying that “Everything can be solved as long as you want to solve it”, so I strive to make things happen!
