Dear colleagues,
One of the key priorities for me as CEO is to understand the challenges and improvement ideas our staff come across, and make sure we follow up on these where possible. Recently, following up on the insights gained from the Employee Engagement Survey, we conducted 10 focus groups and interviews with Nursing colleagues from different job levels in June 2019 to understand what attracted them to join GHK and what are the challenges of working at GHK. The consolidated comments have told us that leadership, teamwork, work processes, work organisation and work environment are the key priorities for improvement. This exercise has allowed us a more thorough understanding on how to attract, retain and develop our Nursing colleagues and I thank our nurses for having openly and constructively shared their views and thoughts during the focus groups and interviews. We already have an action plan in place, and will start work on a number of key initiatives, such as an insurance support team, better workflows with the radiology department, more work on automating and simplifying medication dispensing, more consistency and communication of key issues such as rosters and deployment from the nursing leadership etc. We will communicate more details to our Nursing colleagues soon.
Earlier this year, we also conducted several focus groups with staff to collect your views on how to improve our work environment. The suggestions were broadly related to facilities, furniture, fixtures and equipment, lighting, ventilation, and staff welfare. Thanks to the support from Operations Admin, Human Resources and other relevant departments, over 50% of the action items have been completed as of August 2019. These include replacing the door sensor at A&E, faster expense reimbursement, hot desks for off-site staff, installing individual temperature controls etc. Improvement works such as creating more space for meetings and installing auto doors along patient transfer routes, are also in progress and will be finished by the end of the year. Noting that immediate solutions to some issues are not readily available, eg providing lockers and creating more storage space, we have planned for some of these items to be budgeted and executed for next year.
Culture building has been high on our agenda in the past two years to make GHK a place that you will enjoy working and thrive in. To help us track how far we have achieved in tackling the different lapses identified in last year’s culture survey, we will be conducting another survey in September. I look forward to your active participation and candid feedback in the survey. We will be communicating more on the survey with you in due course. Please take some time to fill out the survey – as you can see from the above, we take it very seriously!
Introducing more all-inclusive packages and helping the public understand the concept better has always been one of our top commitments in promoting fee transparency and certainty. To this end, we have been working on introducing “customised packages”, an additional concept of all-inclusive packages which has been approved by the Department of Health. Under this new package type, a doctor or patient will be able to propose surgeries or procedures to become an all-inclusive package, that is, we offer the same level of price certainty and coverage that includes complications, but with greater flexibility for patients and doctors. We will try to do this for procedures or treatments that cannot be offered as a standard package, for example because the variance of the treatments is too high, although it will not always be possible. Our current 120+ pre-defined standard packages will also continue to be offered and more are under development. We have been engaging staff and doctors to explain to them the concept and execution of customised packages, and hopefully, we will be able to launch some pilot cases in Q3 or Q4 this year.
Recruiting more frontline staff including nurses, healthcare assistants etc remained one of our top priorities in August. This is a priority many of you have also mentioned in surveys and focus groups. In the past two months, we have recruited over 50 nurses, healthcare assistants, OT assistants and Nursing admin support staff. We will be hosting another recruitment day on 2 September and I call for your help to disseminate our recruitment news to your friends or ex-colleagues and encourage them to join us. GHK is experiencing an exciting stage of raising its capacity as more patients and doctors are now choosing to come to us. Please help us to make GHK an even bigger and stronger team.

Gearing up for ACHS Organisation Wide Survey
|
|
|
After some 20 months of preparation by various departments, the five-day Australian Council on Healthcare Standards Organisation Wide Survey (ACHS OWS) will commence in the week of 4 November 2019. To help raise staff’s awareness of the upcoming accreditation exercise, a series of promotion days was launched at Gleneagles Bistro on 15 August. At the kick-off event, CEO Dirk Schraven, COO Dr Kenneth Tsang, CMO Dr Victoria Tan, HKU’s Professor Joseph Lui and General Manager of Operations and General Administration Mr Wilfred Chiu facilitated the Q&A session while communicating to colleagues the progress and timeline of the ACHS OWS. Game booths were also set up to instill in staff knowledge related to the accreditation and quality and safety.
On top of the two promotion days organised in August, two more promotional events will be held on 26 September and 17 October. We look forward to seeing you there!

TRUST workshop – Nurturing an appreciative culture!
|
|
|
Two TRUST workshops were held in August for staff to create traditional handmade minibus signboards and key chains while conveying thankful messages to fellow colleagues. Colleagues from various departments unleashed their creativity and designed the gifts attentively during the workshops. A display of the creative pieces was organised in the month to showcase these unique “thank you gifts”.
Thank you again for your active participation and support. Let’s continue to embrace this appreciative culture and stay tuned for more culture-building activities!

In the mood for mooncakes

GHK celebrated the Mid-Autumn Festival through organising a number of Rainbow Mooncake classes for our colleagues. Organised by GHK Club, the first session was held on 30 August. More than 130 staff have signed up for these classes to learn to make modern mooncakes with their colleagues. Two more sessions will be hosted on 4 and 6 September. Wishing you all a warm and joyous Mid-Autumn Festival!

Meet Doris Choi, our Senior Manager of Radiotherapy & Oncology. Learn more about her career passion and aspirations.
How would you describe yourself?
I am an optimistic and outgoing person, and I consider myself an efficient and result-oriented person. Yet, sometimes I might be too eager to express my views during discussions with fellow colleagues and occasionally overlook their opinions. Yet, I am grateful to have developed the habit of regular self-reflection, which allows me to polish my management skills continuously.
What made you think GHK is the place for you?
I was about to retire from my previous role at a public hospital when I got an opportunity to work at GHK. It was a challenge for me as I hadn’t worked in any private or new hospitals before. With my experience in commissioning the radiotherapy and oncology services in a public hospital, I decided to accept the challenge and joined GHK and to continue with my pursuit of fostering better quality of life Doris crafting couplets with her

What do you see as your greatest achievement/the most
memorable moment in your life or your career?
I would say it was the time when a young cancer patient came to my hospital. His parents were very worried and upset, I started to talk with them and gave them emotional support nearly every time when the patient returned for treatments. The patient recovered eventually. I find my job very meaningful, as I go through a journey with them hand in hand.
Some say taking care of cancer patients can be saddening. What’s your view on this?
Sometimes it is saddening, especially when you see babies or final-stage cancer patients. It could be hard to control your emotions when you feel the struggles and worries of patients and their families. Yet, I always try to focus on doing my best to help them and bringing hopes and positive messages to the patients and families. It is extremely rewarding to see patients getting well, and even become friends with them.
Why do you enjoy Chinese brush painting and calligraphy and dancing?
I love art since I was little and I developed interests in Chinese brush painting, calligraphy and dancing. I find doing Chinese brush painting very calm and relaxing. I am glad that my colleagues and friends appreciate my artwork. I have mounted one of my paintings at the Radiotherapy and Oncology Centre! I have been practising Chinese calligraphy for more than 10 years and I enjoy dancing too, which is very entertaining and good for health.

If you are to dance again at the next Annual Dinner, who at GHK would be your great dance partner?
I would definitely invite our CEO, Dirk, to be my dance partner. I think he is quite talented in dancing and he danced pretty well at the last Annual Dinner. It would also be fun dancing with him as we have a huge difference in height!
Anything that you aspire to achieve or do at GHK, say in the next few years?
I hope to continue to provide a better environment for patients and colleagues in the Radiotherapy and Oncology Centre, while enhancing the level of radiotherapy technology we offer and quality of our services. Together with our dedicated team, I also hope to help promote the brand of GHK among doctors and patients to facilitate GHK to grow and prosper.
