Dear Colleagues,
Social unrest in the city has continued to bring instability and uncertainties to different industries. As communicated to our colleagues at the last town hall meeting, although we experienced some deferrals of non-urgent and non-essential procedures and services, impact on our services has overall been limited, and with your great support, our operations have remained smooth and stable. Recently there have been some news reports on the suspension of projects and staff recruitment by a private hospital due to decreased patient volume. I would like to reassure you that GHK has no plans for suspending any services or projects and will continue to invest resources in areas where there is a demand or potential to grow. At this stage when we are trying to increase capacity to serve more patients and support other developments, our staff recruitment will continue as planned and we will launch further initiatives soon to further improve staff retention. To this end, I call for your support in referring to us talent who you think will share our values and be willing to be part of this exciting journey of bringing innovation and transparency to Hong Kong’s private healthcare.
At the annual IHH Quality Summit staged earlier this month, GHK won a Quality Award with the improvement project “Improve time spent on administration of medications at 8am medication round” and presented the improvements achieved to some 400 colleagues from different markets. Congratulations to Pharmacy and also Wards 7A & 7B and IT on winning this accolade! And “Well done” also to Clinical Laboratory, Nursing and IT which also took the lead in initiating a number of improvement projects related to preventing falls and blood transfusion incidents, promoting speedy and safe care through doctors app, and bedside matching for blood transfusion. I hope that this recognition will continue to encourage us to strive for innovation and improvements in the way we achieve excellent care and standards and bring optimal clinical outcomes for our patients.
As we celebrated the expansion of the Cardiology Clinic, we have recently performed a left atrial appendage closure surgery and has become the first private hospital in Asia to deploy the latest generation of the appendage occluder for this type of surgery. Safer and more precise positioning and shorter surgery time from the use of the device bring about better clinical outcomes and speedier recovery for patients. This is another showcase of our aspiration to be a pioneer and we will continue to support our medical team to introduce at GHK new initiatives and technology which benefit patients.
The results of the Culture Survey have made October an encouraging month. After some two years of effort in building our desired culture in GHK and launching initiatives to support this, I am pleased to share with you that we are seeing a promising shift, as reflected in the significant improvements observed across many departments in the survey results. Most notably, the survey shows a big improvement in the “positive energy flow” of the organisation, which is reflected in better collaboration, more teamwork and continuous improvement, which is very encouraging. However, there are also still areas for improvement, such as bureaucracy, workflow, blame, confusion and employee recognition. Our next step will be to consolidate the key findings and devise measures to ensure that the desired values will continue to flourish, and the limiting ones will be aptly addressed. We have already started working on these and hope to update you on the broad action plan by the end of the year. Meanwhile, thank you again for taking the time to fill in the survey to help us make GHK an even better place for everyone!
After two years of continuous preparation by and collaboration among all departments, the ACHS Organisation Wide Survey will officially start on 4 November. I send my appreciation to you all for helping the hospital get all set and ready for it. On Thursday 7 November, we will organise drinks in our garden to thank our colleagues for all the hard work. We will also use that opportunity to bid farewell to our GHK Board chairman and CEO of IHH Healthcare, Dr Tan See Leng – please all join us that evening. Good luck with the survey week and I am sure that the accreditation will be a milestone which we will all be proud of!

First private hospital in Asia to adopt new left atrial appendage closure device
|
|
|

Staff and doctors celebrated the completion of the expansion of Cardiology Clinic on 14 October. Having performed more than 650 cardiology procedures since operation, our cardiology team has recently achieved another milestone in a left atrial appendage closure surgery during which GHK has become the first private hospital in Asia to deploy the latest generation of the appendage occlude for this type of surgery.
On top of preventing patient’s blood clots from flowing to the brain and causing strokes, this new-generation device, which can be used on more patients compared to the older model, allows patients to benefit from safer and more precise positioning, enhanced conformity for better closure, shorter surgery time and hence faster recovery. Kudos to the team for the great clinical outcomes achieved with this latest device!

We Share, We TRUST
Meet Boris Choi, our Manager of Environmental Services Department. Learn more about his hobbies, religious belief and personal life.
Colleagues always say ES team is cooperative and helpful, what is the secret of such positive spirit?
I’d say our team culture is built with appreciation, communication, respect and trust. Everyone likes compliments and we’re generous in saying so within the team when we see behaviours that deserve recognitions. Our team also has regular meetings like mini town halls during when we exchange updates, thoughts and the good and bad things we encountered at work. I also spend time on listening to colleagues’ problems and try to help as far as possible.
Please use three words to describe your work life at GHK.
Challenge, transformation and appreciation. Changing to work in a hospital from a hotel has definitely been a transformation for me. For instance, we have to maintain at all times high hygiene standards, which are even higher than those of hotels. Appreciation goes to my dedicated and supportive team, which has been working hard with me along the way.
Being a Christian, does it help tackle the stress at work? And in what ways?
Surely it helps. Praying to God gives me strength, wisdom and peace to handle the problems I encounter at work and in life. My religious belief helps me stay positive and motivated. I believe that everything can be resolved and all is done for the glory of God. Also, we should work and live our lives to the full and not to worry about the future too much.
How do you strike a work-life balance and keep your diabetes conditions at bay?
It’s important to exercise regularly and set a timetable for it. I play table-tennis and go hiking on a weekly basis, and I play tennis once a month. Family support also helps me control my diabetic conditions, because I enjoy eating very much. I have to take good care of myself first such that I can take care of my loved ones.
Since when have you developed your interest in photography?
It was by chance that I took photos for the first time at a friend’s wedding banquet, since then, I realised that I enjoyed capturing meaningful moments with a camera. I also like taking pictures of landscapes.
If you are to give a photo to GHK as a gift, what would it be?
A sprouting plant, which is growing and making progress every day.
Who is your role model?
That would definitely be my mother who taught me to respect life and understand that no one is perfect. She once compared life as an ancient Chinese copper coin, which has a square in the middle, saying that one should be agile adaptive to the changing surroundings while standing firm on principles. She also taught me that it is important to have good emotional quotient and attitude in life, and stay calm when we encounter any obstacles.
What is your motto in life?
“Tomorrow will be a better day.” Let’s stay positive and work towards a better future!
