Message from CEO

Dear Colleagues,

The first half of November was an unstable period as continued demonstrations and extensive disruptions to transport networks made coming to work a challenge for many of us. You all made great effort to ensure that you could report duty on time. Without your dedication, GHK would not have maintained its stable operations and service throughout the period. I thank you all for your strong sense of duty and flexibility and keeping our patients close to your heart despite these difficult circumstances.

Building on our sound foundation and increasing trust from patients and doctors, we are striving to increase our capacity to lift our service level, introduce innovative new services and serve more patients. To achieve this, continuous support from our staff is vital. As an appreciation for staff’s contribution to the hospital and their continued support to help us achieve our next milestones, we will launch a Loyalty Bonus scheme over a period of two years for eligible staff of all functions. I hope this will contribute towards growing an even more cohesive GHK team into the future. Details of the scheme will be communicated to you soon, if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Human Resources. As recruitment for certain functions continues, if you know of dedicated professionals who can help us build an even stronger team, please encourage them to join us.

After months of hard work, and with the support from all of you, our hospital completed the ACHS Organisation-Wide Survey in early November, and we are accredited! I was proud that our teams demonstrated to the assessors our high standards and achievements under the different criteria, and that they were impressed by the thorough preparation we had made, and the passion and enthusiasm of our staff.  At the Summation Conference held at the end of the assessment, the assessors gave us a number of commendations on various areas including quality and safety cultures, customer service, HR system, procurement, governance etc. We will update you on the full report when we receive it next month. Meanwhile, I send my deepest appreciation to Prof Joseph Lui and Dr Victoria Tan for leading us through this challenge, and to our Criteria Champions, QSR team and all colleagues who have contributed to making the exercise a smooth and successful one over the past two years.

I am also pleased to share with you that our Food & Beverage (F&B) team has helped GHK make another step forward in ensuring food safety. Through obtaining the Hazards Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) accreditation, which is a scientific and systematic approach to identify, assess and control hazards in the food production process, GHK has become the first, and currently the only, private hospital in Hong Kong to have achieved such accreditation. Many top hotels and restaurants have this accreditation, and our F&B certainly belongs in that category. Please join me in congratulating our F&B team for their great work!

Playing as a partner of a charity initiative, our Spine Centre has recently taken on another complex case in which a young girl with severe deformity from Myanmar underwent a spine surgery at GHK.  Under the care of our multi-disciplinary team, the patient has been making sound progress in rehabilitating. Leveraging the expertise and experience of our orthopaedics teams, GHK will continue to take part in other similar and meaningful causes.

Let me close by expressing the hope that the coming period towards Christmas and New Year will be more stable and quiet, and we can return to building up growth momentum towards the new year!

Dirk Schraven
Chief Executive Officer

GHK is now ACHS accedited!

After four days of ACHS Organisation-wide Survey, we are pleased to share with you that GHK has recently been accredited!.

At the Summation Conference which wrapped up the on-site survey, assessors of the accreditation gave GHK a number of commendations such as “impressed by the passion in training and development”, “well established policies, systems and risk reduction strategies”, “excellent customer services”, “solid HR system” and “very well end of life care”. These were not just a demonstration of our high standards, but also a showcase of excellent teamwork! A full report with recommendations for improvements is expected towards the year-end.

A big thank-you to all colleagues who presented to the assessors, those who swiftly supplemented the assessment with additional information on the day, and those who have been preparing for the exercise behind the scene in the past two years!

Love is all around us at GHK!

Earlier in the month, our Spine Centre joined hands with Silver Lining Foundation to treat a young girl from Myanmar, who suffered from complex spinal deformity as a result of tuberculosis. With her severely collapsed spine, nine-year-old Zheng Cui was in pain and could not walk properly. Under the care of our Spine and Nursing teams, she underwent abscess drainage and a spinal fusion surgery.

Zheng Cui has made encouraging progress after the surgeries and was well enough to join our recent Doctor For A Day workshop! While a series of follow-ups and rehabilitation is still ahead of Zheng Cui, let’s give our support to her by sharing the Facebook posts to people around you.

See the following Facebook posts to learn more about the treatments this brave and amiable little girl has gone through. We will continue to share with you more updates on her recovery on GHK Facebook page.

Teaming up to promote flu vaccination among staff

Since 11 November, flu vaccination for staff has been provided in our Behavioural Health Clinic (Clinic A). To  enhance staff’s awareness of the importance of protecting ourselves against flu, three funny videos have been jointly produced by Quality, Safety & Risk Management Department, Corporate Communications Department, and Infection Prevention and Control Office.

Please click the links below to watch the videos (in Cantonese only):

Special thanks to our “actors” and “actresses”, including CEO Mr Dirk Schraven, Dr Tse Tak Sun, Dr Erick Cheng, Dr Anthony Ho, colleagues from Clinical Laboratory, Environmental Services, Operations & General Administration, Pharmacy, Service Excellence, SOCs, Training & Development, and Ward 7B, for supporting the filming, scripting, make-up, and venue preparation etc for the videos!

If you haven’t had a flu jab yet, please register here and present your staff card in Clinic A from 12:00 to 16:00 on or before 6 December to get vaccinated!

An appreciation from 6,000km afar

Our Radiotherapy and Oncology Centre (RTO) has recently received a heart-warming thank-you letter from a patient who had travelled back to the Middle East after receiving treatments at GHK. From the moment of being under the care of our RTO team, to post-therapy skin care and dietetic advice, the patient was deeply touched every step of the way during the treatment journey. Our appreciation goes to our doctors, nurses, therapists and support staff for going the extra mile in serving patients from their heart and taking great care of both their physical and psychological needs.

Patients’ satisfaction and wellbeing are always the most powerful motivation for us. Let’s continue to bring hopes to more patients and make a difference in people’s lives through excellent patient care!

Ensuring food safety of international standard

Our Gleneagles Bistro has recently been awarded the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) accreditation, marking GHK as the first, and currently the only, private hospital in Hong Kong to have obtained such accreditation.

Developed based on internationally-recognised standards and guidelines, the HACCP is a risk management tool which is used to manage food safety risks by identifying food safety hazards and putting the necessary controls in place for better risk management.

Congratulations to Food & Beverage Department for achieving another great milestone for GHK!
