Message from CEO

Dear Colleagues,

Kung Hei Fat Choy! I hope you have had some celebrations and reunions with your family and friends during Chinese New Year. Thanks to our colleagues who continued to provide excellent care to our patients and stayed highly vigilant amid the Wuhan situation, our operations remained smooth despite the fact that we needed to activate our plans following the escalation of response level to Emergency on the first day of the holiday.

January was a busy month during when we evaluated what we did last year and set new plans and goals to make sure that GHK will be in an even better position this year. At our last town hall we shared with you the three key priorities for 2020, namely “Return to growth”, “Work better together” and “Cost containment”. Based on these priorities, departments have developed and are finalising their respective work plans. GHK went through some ups and downs last year and whenever we faced a common challenge or had a common goal to achieve, all departments demonstrated great teamwork, energy and determination. I look forward to seeing this positivity and excellent team spirit to continue into 2020 as we forge ahead with our various initiatives.

To help realise our plans for more growth, we will continue to develop our people and create a conducive workplace culture and environment. We launched the Loyalty Bonus Scheme earlier in the month to help us build a more cohesive team into the future and fulfil our need for more staff to support growth. By offering our colleagues comprehensive and practical training, which are detailed in the Training Plan released recently, we believe that staff will be empowered to give the best care to patients and they can thrive professionally and personally. The Plan is devised according to the needs and feedback gathered from our staff, I strongly encourage that you actively enroll yourself in courses that are most relevant and useful to you!

The spread of the Wuhan coronavirus has called for the need to step up our preventive and control measures and make contingency plans for our service and operations. Well done to our Infection Prevention and Control team and all frontline and support departments for being highly proactive in responding to the changing situation and having collaborated closely with each other throughout the past month. Please be assured that we have implemented necessary measures to ensure the safety of our staff, patients and visitors, we also have protocols in place to manage different scenarios at GHK. The emergence of the disease has brought extra workload to our staff to some extent, I thank you all for your devotion and support during this challenging period. With our sound foundation and the trust we have built with patients and doctors, I am confident that we will make the best of the opportunities ahead of us and provide patients with even better care and services in the coming year!

I wish you all a happy and healthy Year of the Rat!

Patient Safety Forum –
a platform for continuous improvement and learning

To foster continuous improvement in our patient care and nurture a learning culture, our Quality, Safety & Risk Management team organised the Patient Safety Forum on 23 January. Themed best catch of near misses, the forum was participated by colleagues from clinical and non-clinical departments including Clinical Laboratory, Nursing, Pharmacy, Environmental Services and Service Excellence etc.

At the forum, colleagues were shared with a number of case studies followed by discussions on what could be learnt and improved from the incidents. The near-miss cases opened up exchanges of views from different teams on the current processes, practices, possible improvements, practical tips on how to manage and communicate with relevant parties in similar situations in future, and most importantly, how to prevent occurrence of potential incidents.

Sending warm wishes to staff at Lunar New Year

GHK ushered in the Year of the Rat with fun and engaging celebration party with nearly 400 colleagues on 17 January!

There was joy and laughter in the air as participants received creative red couplets and put on traditional Lunar New Year costumes for photos. Colleagues also spent blissful moments together at game booths while enjoying traditional festive savouries such as rice cakes and sesame balls that symbolise prosperity and happiness. Special thanks to Human Resources and Food & Beverages teams for the delightful and thoughtful arrangements.

May the new year bring good health and success to everyone at GHK!

Striving to make a difference in children’s lives

As you may recall, we took on two charity cases in which two children suffering from complex spinal deformity underwent treatments at GHK. Under the great care of our Spine Centre and Nursing teams, the children had significant improvements in their spinal conditions and they are living a better and happier life!

It was also heart-warming to learn that one of the girls is now a much-happier child and making more friends as her self-esteem improved.

Watch their recovery journeys now captured in videos. Please feel free to share them!

Meet Raymond Chai, our Assistant Manager of Food & Beverage (F&B) Department. Learn more about his hobbies, work and personal life.

What inspired you to have left a renowned hotel and joined GHK?

By the time I got invited by my former supervisor to join GHK, I had already worked in the hotel industry for more than 10 years and I wanted to try something new, so I decided to accept this challenging role to join a newly-established hospital, which I saw it as a rare opportunity in Hong Kong.

What are your other hobbies on top of bowling and football?

I also enjoy building Gundam models, reading fictions and F&B-related books. I like travelling as well, but I am completely fine with just staying home all day too!

If you can choose to live in anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

I’d say Mauritius. I find this place really relaxing, in addition to its spectacular landscapes. I have fallen in love with Mauritius ever since I have visited my uncle who lived there years ago. It’d be nice if I could spend my retired life on such a beautiful island.

How is it like to be the person driving the organising of the GHK Club activities?

I found this meaningful in the sense that the Club can build bonds among colleagues from different departments through fun and relaxing activities. Yet, it could often be challenging to organise activities that satisfy everyone’s needs or fit their work schedules, as most of us have shift duties. It would also be nice to have more colleagues joining the GHK Club organising committee, so we could brainstorm more ideas together and bring entertainment to everyone at GHK sustainably!

What are the top three things you would like to achieve at GHK?
  1. Create happy memories for patients by providing exceptional F&B services
  2. Cater for the needs of fellow colleagues by providing diversified menus at Bistro
  3. Establish designated teams and systems to optimise various operational flows

Who would you recommend to be interviewed in the next GHK Connect and why?

I’d like to know more about our long-serving colleagues who have joined GHK before we started operating. I guess they will have some interesting and inspiring stories to share as they witnessed GHK’s growth in the past few years!
