Dear Colleagues,
February was an exceptionally challenging month for GHK as the coronavirus outbreak continued to heighten. The constantly evolving situation required us to review and adjust regularly not only our policies and measures, but also deployment of our manpower, work arrangements, use of protective supplies etc.
We spare no efforts to make sure that your and our patients’ safety is safeguarded. To this end, we have weekly meetings with our Infection Control Officer Prof Patrick Woo to evaluate whether our measures are effective, should they be adjusted, and if we should act on any emerging risks or trends. At the meetings we also discuss feedback and concerns from you, which are very important in helping us get a fuller picture of the situation on the ground and address issues and difficulties staff may face. We also try our best to communicate with you in a timely manner via different channels to keep you abreast of the latest policies and arrangements and answer questions that we hear most of from you. I encourage that you look out for the Bulletin which is published in mid-week and keep your feedback coming to us.
During the month the shifts of cases from the Hospital Authority (HA) and the reduction in non-urgent surgeries at public hospitals have brought a sudden surge of demand for certain services. This caused an abrupt increase in workload and stress on manpower. As part of the system, we feel that we should support the HA and patients who are affected to the best we can. Yet, we take a prudent and sensible approach and assess the risks of all public hospital cases individually in a very deliberate way such that we keep a balance between alleviating the burden on public hospitals and our capability and staff’s safety. This is an uneasy period for all healthcare professionals in Hong Kong, and I am aware that staff in some of the less busy wards are being redeployed to help others. I ask for your full support and flexibility in these challenging times and we will strive to provide adequate training to help you render support to other teams and wards. Let me send you all gratefulness again for your hard work which has allowed us to operate safely and smoothly during the past couple of months.
In this relatively unsettling period of time, we also noted some encouraging news. Our doctors’ survey results reveal that around 85% of our doctors have a satisfaction level of 7 or above on a scale of 1 to 10. Compliments are received on our staff’s support, environment and facilities, pricing, patient service etc. These better results compared to the previous survey are indications of greater doctors’ trust and attachment towards GHK. We also received many valuable comments on areas such as manpower and systems. We will look into these and take actions to make GHK an even better hospital. Going forward, we will further strengthen our relationships and engagement with doctors such that GHK will become their hospital of choice.
March will be another month when we will continue to closely monitor the development of COVID-19 and ensure the safe environment of GHK for staff and patients. We may probably also be busy with more cases in some areas, be they HA referrals or patients who look for care in a private setting. Let’s keep our spirit strong as we join hands to fight the epidemic together and provide the most appropriate care to patients who need us.
