Message from CEO

Dear Colleagues,

In the past month, all of us at GHK have continued to work hard and be on high alert to combat COVID-19. The crisis is getting substantially worse throughout the world, including an intensifying economic fallout. The next few weeks will be crucial for how the epidemic will evolve in Hong Kong, and I appeal to all of you to remain very vigilant to mitigate the risks. I also realise the epidemic is impacting your personal lives substantially, and I would like to give you full reassurance that the hospital will look after your interests as best as we can, as was also articulated by our Group CEO in his video message.

Despite the above, we felt necessary to have some celebration with our staff as March was a special month which marked GHK’s 3rd anniversary. I would like to take this special occasion to thank you for everything that you have done to bring GHK to where it is today. In just three years, we have achieved many remarkable milestones. We progressively launched more new clinical services including Obstetrics ward, Joint Replacement Centre, Behavioural Health inpatient ward, Spine Centre, Orthopaedic Ward etc. We also opened our first satellite clinic and just a few months ago, we achieved full ACHS accreditation. All of these unique services and our high quality patient care have helped us earn high satisfaction from both patients and doctors. I extend my sincerest gratitude to you for being part of GHK’s growth journey and helping us build a sound foundation.

In the past few weeks, we made different steps to enhance our capability in screening suspected cases from our patients and the wider community, prepare ourselves for the possible scenario of having a confirmed inpatient case, and minimise the risks our patients and staff are exposed to as far as we can. We have started arranging COVID-19 tests for clinically-indicated inpatients in collaboration with HKU, and our in-house tests have also become available. These are on top of the COVID-19 tests we have been arranging for patients to support the DOH’s enhanced surveillance of infection in the community. To ensure that we will be ready to deal with the possibility of confirmed inpatient cases in an efficient and coordinated manner, we have conducted a table-top drill with all relevant departments and involved departments are also conducting their own mini drills. The government’s latest measures to impose compulsory quarantine on all inbound overseas travellers triggered the need for us to apply the same principle to our staff, and to ask our staff with family members returning from overseas and living with them under home quarantine to report to HR and their supervisors. We are hosting the third staff forum for COVID-19 on 1 April and also our town hall meeting in April. Be assured that we have made arrangements such that social distancing principles will be adopted.

Hong Kong is bracing for another wave of high risks of community outbreak as a result of the surge in the number of imported cases. GHK will continue to play our part in giving the best care to patients in need, protecting the health of our staff, patients and visitors, and helping control the spread of the disease in our community. Please be assured that we have maintained sufficient protective equipment and supplies and you will have all the support you need to allow safe execution of duties.

Thank you again all for getting through these difficult times with all of us at GHK, and please continue to stay vigilant and safe.

Dirk Schraven
Chief Executive Officer

Portering service requests made easy!

Making and tracking requests for portering service is now at our fingertips! Launched on 25 March, the Auto Porter System (APS) aims to optimise the hospital’s portering services, adding convenience to both our users and porters. This newly introduced electronic platform, which can be accessed through the APS icon on your desktop or tablet, enhances communication accuracy by minimising the chances of misinterpretation of verbal requests, while allowing real-time tracing of service request status. The APS also enables speedy and efficient analysis of daily records to facilitate future improvement.

Nurturing an appreciative culture

Since the COVID-19 outbreak, our Infection Prevention & Control team has been playing a critical role in initiating and managing a spectrum of precautionary measures to ensure that our staff, patients and visitors are well protected. The same is true with our Material Management Department which has made strenuous effort to secure stable and sufficient protective supplies for the hospital despite the global shortages. Our CEO Dirk Schraven sent his appreciation to the respective teams with gifts, marking the beginning of a newly-introduced scheme “On-the-Spot Recognition”.

In nurturing a culture in which we recognise work of excellence, hospital management team makes monthly recognition nominations for teams that have rendered great work or achievement, and these recognitions are presented to staff in departmental meetings, town halls etc.

Be proud of the difference you have made

In late 2019, our Spine Centre took on a charity case and treated a young girl from Myanmar who had severe spine deformity. You will be pleased to know that she has been making great recovery progress. Though with a mask on her face, we can see her beaming with happiness in a recent photo with her attending doctor Prof Kenneth Cheung, Director of GHK Spine Centre!

  Happy 3rd anniversary, GHK!

GHK thanked all colleagues for their continuous support and contribution to the hospital with a number of surprises and weekly quizzes as it celebrated its 3rd birthday! Let’s take a look at some of the highlights!

Doctors and colleagues congratulated GHK on its 3rd birthday!

Our "3" Surprises to thank our colleagues

Colleagues were pleasantly surprised by the presence of hospital management team who put on aprons and gloves to serve them lunch at Gleneagles Bistro.

We all love some sweetness in life, particularly on this special occasion! We sent our tokens of thankfulness to staff with custom-made anniversary sweets and “3-in-1” travel bags which carry our CEO Dirk Schraven’s handwritten anniversary greeting.

Thank you everyone again for being part of GHK and
Happy 3rd Anniversary!

 We Share, We TRUST

It’s a team sharing this time!  Recently, we had the pleasure of speaking with our nurses Clara, Becky and Echo of our Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) team, which has been playing a critical role in spearheading our preventive measures since the COVID-19 outbreak.
