Dear Colleagues,
Although the new housing block cluster sparked some concerns earlier in June and imported cases have continued to be recorded during the month, COVID-19 situation in Hong Kong and our hospital operation has in general been stable. May was an encouraging month that many of our services showed a notable rebound of patient volume, this momentum has continued in June when we saw some new highs in areas such as health screening, OTs and endoscopy. As the city has further relaxed some of the restrictions such as those on group gathering, we have started stepping down some of our measures related to our access controls and internal training and engagement activities, while observing all the necessary precautions including temperature screening, social distancing etc.
We have been actively coordinating with the Department of Health and enhancing our capacity to conduct COVID-19 testing to facilitate the implementation of the Hong Kong health code scheme for cross-border travelling. As one of the accredited hospitals to perform such test with certification, our relevant departments and workflows are now all set for the launch. Anticipating that COVID-19 testing may become one of the new normal requirements for travelling between countries as well as for our own admission screening in the longer run, we will continue to ramp up our virus testing capacity and stay responsive to any new development related to the testing.
Following the opening of our PICU, earlier in the month we celebrated the launch of brachytherapy at our Radiotherapy and Oncology Centre. This targeted and highly-precise radiotherapy has enhanced our capability to treat different clinical conditions, further complementing our existing suite of cancer treatments. Congratulations to our Radiotherapy and Oncology team!
I am also pleased to share with you another remarkable milestone that our Obstetrics and Gynaecology service has recently received the Certificate of Accreditation by the Hong Kong College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists. The accreditation is not only a recognition of our clinical services, but also a testament to the quality of our staff and doctors, facilities and environment, and supporting care for patients. Thank you O&G team for earning us another important building block of GHK’s excellence and professionalism!
After a period of patient volume decline caused by the pandemic, it is critical for GHK to grow again as to secure a healthy development in the long run. Moving into the second half of the year, we will be placing more focus on initiatives to help put GHK back on its growth track. These include recruiting quality staff to help develop service areas where there have been clear growth, leveraging digital applications to reach out to our local patients, engaging clients from the Mainland upon re-open of borders, and collaborating closely with HKU and other specialists to develop more specialty centres.
The return of some of our patients in the past couple of months is a positive sign and we anticipate that more patients will resume their bookings with us if local situation remains stable. Please be assured that we will continue to provide you with the support you need to ramp up some of our services and most importantly, keep you safe. Meanwhile, thank you for being highly supportive and flexible in the past months when we needed to implement various new measures and workflows to meet the changing circumstances.

Strengthening our service for cancer patients with
launch of brachytherapy

Services provided by our Radiotherapy and Oncology Centre has been made even more comprehensive with the recent launch of brachytherapy service. A type of radiotherapy, a sealed radiation source is placed inside a patient’s body to treat a more targeted area with a shorter period of time than is possible with radiation delivered from outside the body. This highly-localised treatment means less radiation is delivered to surrounding healthy tissues. The Centre has already received its first brachytherapy patient and good progress of the treamtment has been made.
Let’s put our hands together for RTO team!

Our Obstetrics and Gynaecology service has recently been awarded the Certificate of Accreditation by the Hong Kong College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists, making GHK one of the 14 public and private hospitals in Hong Kong that have achieved the accreditation.
The certification recognises GHK’s successful fulfilment of the standards and requirements set by the College in various aspects including safety, clinical audits, quality assurance, staff training, equipment, environment, number of patients treated, manpower support etc.
Kudos to all colleagues of the O&G team for their continuous pursuit of professional and excellent care!

We Share, We TRUST
It’s a team sharing this time! Recently, we had the pleasure of speaking with Fanteny, Natalie and Wilson from Material Management team, which has been playing a critical role in sourcing and securing our personal protective equipment since the COVID-19 outbreak. Read on to know more about the team.

1. What does MMD team feel about being awarded the “On-the-spot Recognition”?
Fanteny: We were overjoyed, because it had really been exhausting and frustrating in the beginning of the pandemic outbreak. We really tried very hard to ensure colleagues’ safety.
Natalie: We were overwhelmed that our efforts and hard-work got recognised. This also helped develop stronger bonding in our team.
Wilson: We have developed even better team spirit as we all worked to achieve the same objectives.
2. We noted that the MMD team has made strenuous effort to secure stable and sufficient protective supplies for GHK amid the global shortages. How did the team overcome the challenges?
Fanteny: We had anticipated a shortage since mid-January, when many manufacturers started to ignore our enquiries and cancelled our orders. Yet, we didn’t give up and continued sourcing vendors globally.
Natalie: I still recall that our team had to work til late hours on the last day before the Lunar New Year to search for new vendors of masks, gown, goggles and sanitising hand rub etc.
Wilson: I was mainly responsible for coordinating the asset codes of new purchases, and it was challenging because the quantity was huge, and the timeline for allocating the anti-pandemic items to colleagues was tight.
All: But it was rewarding when our efforts started to pay off and departments began to receive the anti-pandemic items which had been evaluated by Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) team.
3. Has the team encountered any other major challenges previously? How did the team manage it through?
Fanteny: There used to be some misunderstanding among MMD and various user departments regarding workflows and procurement lead time, but since Flora has joined us, she encouraged us to communicate with users more frequently, while explaining the necessary processes to users with detailed follow-ups.
Wilson: For me, it was not easy to relocate the store room from GHK to Gee Cheong Hong, but our teammates were cooperative and we worked hard together to complete the task with flying colours.
4. Please name one thing you enjoy the most working in MMD team.
Natalie: Our team has a WhatsApp chat group, in which we shared useful information or caring reminders such as ad-hoc projects, news and even weather warnings. This can often be heart-warming and no one is left out.
Fanteny: That’s very true. It also helps make processes more efficient by sharing information in the group.

5. Does the team currently have a common goal that it wants to achieve together?
Fanteny: Yes, we have been working hard to ensure that our PPEs stock can last for at least three months, and implementing some cost-saving initiatives while meeting the needs of different departments.
Natalie: Apart from PPEs, food delivery has also been affected by the pandemic. We are trying to source new vendors amid rising costs, while keeping an eye on newly engaged vendors which might close their business without prior notice.
6. If the team is to thank one department, which would this be and why?
Fanteny: I’d like to thank IPC team for working so hard to assess the quality of numerous anti-pandemic products under tight deadlines.
Natalie: I deeply appreciate Finance team for having spotted some harsh terms and conditions in payment details requested by our PPE vendors.
Wilson: We also feel very grateful that colleagues from wards, A&E and Radiology sent us encouraging messages and even snacks! Thank you so much.
7. Any other interesting story about the team that you would like to share?
Fanteny: It is not surprising that most of our teammates would skip their lunch due to deadlines. Our snack area actually provides an even better meal than a proper lunch outside. (We are not joking)
Natalie: I once locked myself in a one-way store room without my mobile phone and I had to send a fax to inform my fellow colleagues to help me out but in vain. I was “rescued” only after a colleague noted that I had gone missing.
Wilson: I used to get lost in the hospital sometimes!
