5th anniversary staff sharing series – “My memorable moments at GHK”
Message from CEO

Dear Colleagues,

While many of us are working hard towards achieving the goals that we have set at the beginning of the year, GHK has been actively drawing up its development plan to support its growth strategy.

We took the opportunity at the latest Town Hall Meeting to share with you the multi-faceted strategic goals for the next few years, covering branding, staffing, clinical services, facility improvement, technology application and business development and more. Going in parallel with our continued effort to raise the brand awareness of IHH and GHK both locally and in Mainland China, we will further strengthen the culture of a “GHK family”, enhancing staff career development, building greater employee satisfaction and promoting a stronger service culture. On the clinical front, we will further develop our outpatient services such as opening more new satellite clinics, raising service capacity of SOC and allied health, promoting telemedicine services, and opening up more operating theatres. While we are excited about taking GHK to the next level, I look forward to your full support and involvement in helping make GHK one of the best hospitals in Hong Kong and beyond!

You may still recall that two years ago we conducted the group-wide Employee Engagement Survey. With the results and feedback obtained from the survey, we have since then progressively rolled out different measures to try to make our hospital an engaging and conducive workplace for all. These include introducing the loyalty bonus, voluntary provident fund scheme, long service award, staff recognition scheme, support for staff well-being, and various staff engagement activities. Two years on, did we manage to achieve what aimed to achieve? The survey will soon be conducted, please tell us what you think to help us better understand the effectiveness of the measures implemented and how else we can make things better for you.

The past few months saw the launch of different celebratory activities for the 10th year of listing of IHH. If you had joined the online global staff event staged a couple of weeks ago, I hope you were as excited as I was when the commemorative gold coin for GHK’s pioneer staff was voted by the IHH community as one of the 10 most symbolic items to be sealed in the IHH Time Capsule. Not only was it a momentous occasion but also a recognition of the great contribution our pioneers had made to GHK during that important stage of our development journey.

As you may be aware, GHK has provided further anti-pandemic support to the community through collaborating with the Hospital Authority to provide free online consultation and medication delivery services for elderly COVID-19 patients. Despite the tight timeline, the service was up and running within a short period of time, and over 9,000 patients have been served since the launch in late August. It was indeed a showcase of great teamwork and professionalism, and I attribute this success to all colleagues who took part in the proficient planning and implementation of the service. Well done team!

Ongoing efforts to improve patient safety

The annual Patient Safety Forum was hosted for staff as part of the hospital’s wider effort in ensuring quality of care. At the forum, staff learnt from Mr Dennis Fullgrabe, Assistant Director (Clinical Governance) of HKU Health System, the do’s and don’ts in clinical auditing in preparation for the next accreditation by the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards International.

“Care for Planet” with reusable meal containers

GHK is going the extra mile for the environment through helping staff use less plastic.

Taking colleagues’ views and preferences into consideration, our Food and Beverage team has sent to all staff as a gift a set of reusable meal container with a soup bowl. What’s more, staff who bring the full set of the meal box or their own containers to order the daily set lunch or dinner takeaways at Gleneagles Bistro will enjoy a special discount!

Small acts can have a big impact. Together, let’s make our planet a better place for everyone!

Hats off to our devoted teams

Congratulations to our Gleneagles Medical Clinic Central (GMC) and Rehabilitation Services teams, award recipients of the recent “On-the-spot Recognition”!

Since its opening in 2019, the GMC team of doctors, nurses, dispensers and support staff has been a showcase of professional care and service. Despite the surge in demand for services at GMC amid the 5th wave of the epidemic, the team exemplified resilience and great teamwork in overcoming many challenges while at the same time achieving promising growth.

Appreciation also goes to our colleagues of Rehabilitation Services for always ensuring an excellent recovery journey for patients with passion and dedication. Amid the substantial rise in patient volume through the Public-Private Partnership Programme, the team has made strenuous efforts in offering great care for all patients with diverse rehabilitation needs.

Let’s put our hands together for the deserving teams!

“Uniquely Yours” video series – Touching hearts with empathy

Following the launch of the first “Uniquely Yours” video story in August, we were pleased to present lately the second story which captures how our nurses put themselves in patients' shoes, understand their thoughts and feelings, and act on that understanding to enhance care.

My five “Mosts” at GHK
Billy Lo | Assistant Food & Beverage Manager

The most memorable
It would have to be the Grand Opening of GHK on 21 March 2018! Having joined the F&B team for less than a year, I was excited yet nervous about being tasked to manage the cocktail party for the hundreds of guests. In addition to venue preparation, menu design and logistical arrangements, we also needed to hire within a short time frame dozens of temporary staff to support the event. It was very rewarding to see that our guests had an enjoyable catering experience at the event.

The greatest change
Back then when I was in the hotel industry, my focus was to manage the overall operations of the restaurant and ensure that it was making sufficient profit. However here at GHK, we put patient’s needs first.

The greatest teamwork
I was deeply moved by my colleagues who demonstrated superb team spirit during the most difficult months of the epidemic earlier this year. To help ensure the smooth running of F&B service during the peak of the fifth wave, our team stayed diligent and professional despite the long hours for an extended period of time.

The most creative
It has to be the chance to take part in creating GHK’s signature festive delicacies including mooncakes, Chinese New Year pastries, the XO sauce and tea bags!

The most thankful
I wish to say thanks to our Environmental Services team for always being there to support us whenever we encounter issues during venue preparation.

I am truly thankful to my supervisor Billy who always backs me up with trust and offer me opportunities to grow my career. I also feel obliged to thank my F&B colleagues for being so conscientious and committed at all times!
